Had my home and shop broken into this week with quite a bit taken. Wondering if anyone has any input on security systems for your farms/acreages?

We use a wireless cow cam system from Rostech. The DVR allows you to record about 2 months and when it’s full it will start deleting from the beginning so there’s never a worry that it won’t be working. It’s been a great system and the company is pretty easy to deal with.

If you're okay setting everything up yourself and you've got high speed internet to remotely monitor the connection Logitech actually makes some quite affordable home security camera's

Why Insurance companies don’t offer discounts for insuring a property with security cameras? With the technology we have today - like the ability to send a live video to your phone - it would seam quite discouraging to be a thief. That evidence would be hard to deny in court. I’m hardly comfortable driving into a rural yard even with good intentions.

They generally have there faces covered and of course dont have name tags add to this police response is likely three quarters of an hour . These guys work fast - so there isn't much chance of getting caught that is why you dont get a discount on your insurance . I have had my crooks faces posted on crime stoppers for 6 month's and no dice .

what I understand (and someone can correct me if I'm wrong)...the security system is basically useless in a rural setting, or outside the city. The systems that "work" send the alarm to a remote place which then sends the call to police/ems/fire and if you're lucky the police will even respond. If you're in an area like I am (in a small rural town) the RCMP are usually 1.5hrs away even though they're stationed here. So while you have a big fancy system that'll make more noise than it's worth, you won't have any real protection. I will admit the advantage of having Fire dispatched is a bonus as it's usually linked to a smoke alarm and that seems to work too good, cause I have responded to many burnt toast alarms, but it works as fire is usually somewhat close to the hall to respond.  
I have a system in the house I bought in brandon, and I have it unplugged and will be buying a few video cameras for around my place in very discrete place inside and outside to catch any criminal activity. I may lose some items, but better chance of getting someone caught or proof I was robbed and it's cheaper than a monthly fee. I know apple had a decent system for a few hundred $$ with alarm, video and went to your cell phone with no monthly fee (this was a few years back so may have changed) and we had Logitech wireless systems in my one workplace on top of the alarm and actually worked better than the alarm company.

cameras on our property outside of Brandon. We put them up due to problems with some neighbors and sure came in handy with the vids/pics we got.  
we are in the process of getting more detailed cams, for nite vision and day vision......there are more vehicles around here that don't belong around here we see on cam.....

im sure most farms still rely on the 12gauge security

Do not use a shot gun you are fond of - at the very least the RCMP will come and take it away from you.

Any suggestions for cameras that don’t require an Internet hookup? We don’t have internet but would like a camera that can store some videos

….just make sure they are not out in the open or accessable because we had one stolen off our property a couple years ago.....that is why we went with the hard wired and recorder in the house....
