    Serious incident in Onanole

    A series of break ins tonight in the Onanole area led to an officer being wounded and taken by STARS ambulance. There are reportedly three suspects on the loose in a stolen trick - a 2005 black GMC Sierra with MB license plate gbx 470. Contact police as they are armed and dangerous.

    It goes to show that these types of situations can happen anywhere and at anytime. Hopefully the officer makes a full recovery.

    that led to a serious shooting. It was only a matter of time. My father in law owned a rural property just east of Erickson and north of 357. Family was only out on the property some weekends. Eventually he had to sell it and the buildings because of multiple break ins and thefts of property. Property was tracked down to a community in the area but nothing ever came of it. I hope the RCMP officer recovers from his injuries and all alleged in the act are brought to justice.

    Yes, and this case proves how those armed thieves have no disregard for human life by shooting a police officer. I guess that means they wouldn’t hesitate to shoot a landowner either. Dangerous times we are in, and even a crazier time for Trudeau to talk about banning guns. Maybe he needs to focus on banning crime, and harsher sentences??

    who lives on a farm or an isolated home needs a firearm for protection, end of.  
     
    Yes the federal gov't needs to get serious for criminals. Someone selling drugs gets a longer sentence that someone who assaults or harms innocent people.

    there is no quick fix or this would have been taken care of by now. That is why some incidents like this happen. Harsher sentences won't fix it either. It is a crime of opportunity. For every incident like this there are 20 more break ins they get away with. I am glad to see that rural property owners are starting to use technology like trap and trail cams to try and catch offenders. This crime is on the rise and is much to easy to get away with. Not happy the officer was shot but am glad that the property owners cousin did wait for law enforcement to attend the scene rather than trying to take the law into his own hands. Instead of talking gun bans or harsher sentences I think a heavier police presence in rural areas would be a good start.

    What we need is to adopt the 3 strikes rule. If your a criminal and your found guilty of a crime 3 times you go to prison for 10 years. Good behaviour your out in 6. Maybe that would detour some of these people who have no regards for hard working peoples belongings

    I hope when they release the names this thread remains about this event and security in the country side in general. One ten minute period of waiting for police to reply is one thing. A hour or more absolutely means it must be self care out there. Guns or not. The who does it is less important than us finally deciding if a property crime can be met with a gun. So easily someone committing that property/poverty crime or some say crime of opportunity is a step away from a home invasion or their own gun crime. A rural home owner needs a better answer from protective services. I am glad the officer was not another statistic.

    got their men. I realize that an officer being shot quickens their pace in which they respond, but within hours they had tracked down and apprehended four individuals that are dangerous to all of us. Great job done by the RCMP!!!!

    with attempted murder and the others only charged with property crimes and weapons charges. Amounts to a slap on the wrist after being part of a very heavy incident. Why no charges for evading arrest or not following the direction of a peace officer?

    I agree the charges for the other three are light. Would not doubt that only one attempted murder charge was one only had the weapon or a weapon involved. Accessory after the fact of attempted murder? The system could throw the book at these guys. Yet as in capital crimes in Quebec there seems to be a built in discount per crime when they all are laid at the same time. Take that incident in the Quebec legislature years back. Three people were shot and killed. The clown got ten years. It should have been ten years per person. In this case here we must wait and see. Innocent until proven. Maybe more charges will come later. I will be interested in the outcome one may be in jail for a while. The other three may need a wake up call.

    It is easy to say throw the book at them. At this point we just take the word of the RCMP that these guys are the ones that did the crime . It has to be proven beyond any doubt. I would be very interested in how they got arrested so quickly - certainly when an officer gets shot they pull out all the stops but even so there has not been enough time even for a DNA check. How did those two officers pull up and get shot at and manage to get a positive visual id on 4 individuals. Dont get me wrong - I support the RCMP but I would be very interested in how they did it .

    The one charged with attempted murder was the one who pulled the trigger, that’s just how it works. Likely they chose the larger charges, but yes a little surprise there was nothing for causing a prolonged manhunt. That took a lot of resources away from other areas.

    The pics from the camera clearly showed the two men's faces. Once they were caught they gave up the other two pretty fast.

    I am so glad to hear he is recovering. It will be a long road. Physically I may be quicker than emotionally. It takes time to get over a traumatic event.  
     
    The officer with him needs assistance as well. It would be hard to deal with seeing your partner hurt.
