Resumes are only as good as your references

Now-a-days, resumes are only really as good as your references and your portfolio. Employers are becoming choosy because there are a lot of people looking for work. There are also a lot of very smart, educated and skilled people looking for work.
There is no holy grail of resume style or writing, there is the idea of who you are and whether it lines up to what you write on the page. Making sure you have your story lined up is good: if making a portfolio of works to be cited, with references linked, is a major step.
It doesn't have to be long, but it has to paint the picture of you working yourself into their picture ('the organization'). LinkedIn is a sort of e-resume that has some portfolio qualities: could be linked to a portfolio page on google's blogspot.com site.
Note of caution, look at comparable resume portfolios for the position: make sure you are somewhat in alignment. Individualize it to avoid looking cookie cutter
Choose your word's wisely. Revise, revise, revise.
