I can't say I have really heard anyone criticizing farmers for herbicide and insecticide use. It's practically impossible to avoid some usage, I have however heard of people being critical of the careless farmers that pollute and contaminate nearby bodies of water by careless use of such products by not following good applicator guidelines. There are and will always be the small minority that think all chemical use is bad, shouldn't use hormones in livestock, cows should be massaged and pampered and chickens should roam around freely but these folks have always existed. They are just a lot more vocal nowadays. Similar to all the cop haters that think they should be defunded, abolished or some other crazy idea they've dreamed up...well that is of course until someone commits a crime that effects them or the multitude of other reasons why we need law and order in society but that is whole other topic.
