So, I am wondering how this works to use sage in a house. I would like to get rid of any negative/spirits in my apartment.  
1. Do I start upstairs or downstairs? ( does it matter)  
2. Do I burn the sage in a room for so long before moving on?  
3. Do I walk slow through each room and do I need to concentrate on certain areas of the room? Corners?  
4. Can I use my hand to spread the smoke around or does something else work better?  
5. Do I need to open any windows or doors while doing this?  
 
Please add anything else that I may need to know to do this properly. Thank you everyone I appreciate your help in advance.

I usually start in the rooms I'm in most. My living room, then go to my daughters bedrooms. I smudge above and below their beds and pray for them as im smudging. ( my daughter has bad night terrors)  
 
I start in my living room and go room to room.  
As long as you set the intentions of the smudge and while you're smudging, pray or say out loud what your intentions are, or even in your head.  
There's not really a proper or improper way to do it. Some elders say dont light it with a lighter and some say it doesnt matter how you light it. Same with blowing on it, some use feathers and some use their hands, or they blow on it.  
Set good intentions for yourself and your area your smudging and smudge away

I usually go room to room, once the smokes in the room it cleanses the entire room, although I do walk to the walls and then back out.. I go over every picture of my loved ones and pray for them to maintain health and wellness as well, then after I'll take it into my basement and let it burn out, dont "put" it out. Let it burn until it stops smoldering.

Please get consent from your landlord before you start. Had someone take upon themselves to do it in an apartment. Other tenants were unhappy, the odor lingered on 'til they moved out. I don't know if it was a regular habit during their occupation, but it cost me time to clean carpets and wash down wall to only give up and replace & repaint because I couldn't air the unit out. I understand it's cultural, but burning sage, sweat grass & whatever created a huge disruption within my apartment block that resulted in damages that I had to claim against the tenant.  
 
Do not take it for granted that it's some form of protected tenants rights and proceed with it without permission.  
 
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Sage has many MANY benefits for use of smudging, drinking, eating and taking baths with. It's actually got many antibacterial properties and keeps alot of bacteria away and at bay. A simple google of sage and antibacterial properties will yield tons of useful information  
But, like the person above said, if you cant use sage by smudging, you can DRY SMUDGE, which is to rub it in between your hands and rub it onto your body, pictures, walls, ect... when I dry smudge I leave some leafs wherever I smudged. I smudged my oracle cards the other day and left some leaves inside the box. you could also make a tea with it by boiling it for a few minutes in some water.
