They just mentioned it on CBC news (radio) with more to come - a person was stabbed last night at the skate park. A group of 5 was yelling racial slurs at a black man, and ended up stabbing him. 2 have been arrested and charged with inciting hate(? not sure of exact wording of charge), 3 still being sought.

I'll post more as I find it. Nothing online yet. They're going to talk about it more between 8 & 8:30.

4 female & 1 male suspects, 2 females in custody. Charged with inciting hate and assault. 3 suspects still being sought. Status of victim unknown, black adult male.

Bring back stocks or pillories for minor offences.
(no, stabbing is not minor)

Public humiliation of people for committing some crimes is more of a discouragement than a fine or basically nothing.

Pleez don’t hate on me. It could be done more ‘humanely’ than it was back in the day. Just floating ideas to ponder.

How disgusting & horrible that this has happen in Brandon.
I hope they threw all them in jail for a very long time.
We have to put a STOP to this kind of behaviour Now!
We have to all work together to safe our town from this kind of behaviour.
We all want to feel SAFE in our town, not living in fear that criminals are going to stab us 5 times.
Come on Brandon! We can do better than that!

What’s described in the story is dispicable and there absolutely needs to be consequence within the justice system for anyone determined to be guilty of what’s described. Thankful to read that the victim is expected to make a full recovery.

Regarding charges and ultimately determination of guilt or non-guilt of any given individual charged, please keep in mind that the justice system has a process that must be followed in judging fact and determining consequence in the event of a guilty determination.

Without all facts I can’t speak to this specific case to say what does and doesn't apply here, but just as an example of the investigative process many might remember that in the home explosion case last fall there was an initial charge that was later upgraded in the course of investigation.

The Brandon Police have just shared that they will be providing further update at 1:30pm:

I fully understand the emotion in the community right now. I'd ask that posts please be as factual as possible and avoid speculation outside of what’s known, respectful of the investigative process that is ongoing.

My son showed the video to me. His friends were there and are in total disbelief to what they witnessed. Without question, to what was described to me that this was racial. The video doesn't show what lead up at the park. Only the confrontation and stabbing that occurred in the middle of the street. They swarmed him, he defended himself, they swarmed him again, was knocked/pulled down to his knees and backside, then a lone individual ran up and dramatically thrusted something (presuming a knife) about five or six times, then the group broke up. I'm not saying anything else about the video other than I recognized the victim and my son know his older boy. (both were apparently there, but off screen) Honestly, I never knew this flat out hatred existed against those of Africa decent in Brandon. Shocked and ashamed that this happened here. I hope the police come down hard on those five, with maximum charges and sentencing.

Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Is that they were only charged with aggravated assault.. they'll plead guilty to the lesser charge and be out of jail in 6 months... maybe less.

IMO there is a problem with the justice system. The police catch criminals only to have lawyers and judges get/give them reduced sentences.

I also think jail should be a place where if you’ve been there once, you think about the repercussions of going back if you’re committing another crime. If you’re in jail, you should be put to work to earn your room and board and then some. Why should honest tax payers pay for criminals to watch eat, watch tv, learn and work out?

What's really sad is that posters here think that justice will done. My guess is that it's highly unlikely that any of the 5 see any jail at all. If they do, it will certainly be minimal. Much more reasonable to expect a sentence in the form of time at a healing lodge.

The aggravated assault charge will be because that is the most obvious charge that the police have in their tool box at the scene. You don't want to charge with a higher offence and then have to back off so you go with the lowest charge that you know will stick and upgrade from there.

The police may currently have no idea which higher charge to go with until they investigate more.

...Restorative justice ...there is no such thing as real justice in Canada now. It is like fishing.. catch and release.

I am shocked there are people in our community that did this.
We are “Friendly “ Manitoba ! I have NEVER in all my years witnessed anyone verbally attack someone because of their ethnicity, and to go bat Sh#$ crazy and stab someone is absolutely crazy. No one in their sane mind could hurt someone because of the colour of their skin....they had to be on meth or something
I’m devastated this happened in our city, so so sad.

where have you been,you dont have to look very far to see the hatred thats involved in this city, newspapers and even this news handy site reveals every day whats happening in this city. if you want to be safe maybe moving to the country is the only answer,the bps reports every day the crime and assaults that is taking place, this didnt just start yesterday,better get used to it ,it isnt going to stop any time soon

why the .... did they put it there in the first place.other communities put family orientated activities in well established family areas , not some scummy place like downtown brandon,great thinking ,i hope my tax dollars are not being wasted.

Actually a large part of this "scummy place" of downtown Brandon is residential, owned by taxpayers as well. Have you considered that one way city planners attempt to decrease crime in a given area is by creating public spaces. Princess Park is a prime example of this technique.

Let's not forget what this thread is about and who is to blame for this crime. Blaming the city in this instance is about as intelligent as blaming the victim for being there.

Why would they when by doing so would not solve the problem. Why should we expect the city to run from the problem as opposed to finding a solution? Brandon is not that big...crime is everywhere and criminals are mobile.

I totally agree a second skate park is not a solution and crime can happens anywhere. However it’s a solid fact that in many other parts of town/ neighborhoods we would not see/hear/worry about the things we have to at the downtown location. Consistently and commonly there are situations that make me uncomfortable downtown. Police regularly drive by - which I appreciate very much - so that everyone- including our children can use this amazing facility

A couple of years ago at the winter fair, I witnessed 2 older men verbally assault 2 of the vendors because of their race. It left me in tears to be honest. I can’t say for sure, but if I saw this happen, I would hope that I stepped in to help someone being physically assaulted. I was surprised when watching the video that a couple of cars drove by and ignored it like nothing was happening.

I hope the man heals quickly and that the attackers are held responsible. What a traumatizing event for all that witnessed it

You couldn't pay me to stop and get in the middle of the fracas. Most of the times there will be a weapon in someone's hand!

I had a look at the video, it's too bad that the last person joining in had a knife, the victim was holding his own quite well and even was the first one to walk away. If not stabbed he could have demolished the punks which is totally what they deserved!

It pretty sad that people saw & watched this happen.
Why wouldn’t someone stop & help this poor guy that these Criminals were stabbing.
What is our town becoming???
