I used to work in a mail order parts department. We shipped all over the world (except Canada and US) for liability reasons. Our couriers at the time would never leave a package unless it was signed for . The only exception was if there were express instructions on the delivery ticket to leave at the door, neighbour, back yard etc.  
In this country I find courier service poor. They don’t deliver to rural addresses which creates collection issues in our town.  
I have most packages shipped to me Canada post , they put a card in my mail box and I pick up from the post office the next day. It’s the best system ever and works great! I have large parts orders delivered this way regularly. The trouble is many Canadian retailers refuse to ship to a mail box number and for the life of me I don’t understand why. As a customer I’d much rather pay for the convenience of Canada Post delivery.

I remembering hearing that contactless delivery was being done by all delivery services. No signage or ringing of the doorbell would happen.  
 
As others suggested I would check with the delivery service you are using. Sending to work is a great alternative. Sending to the local store your online order is also a great alternative.  
 
Rural areas are tough. Though all courier services are required to deliver to rural areas if an address. I would think the majority have an address as it was put in as a requirement for emergency purposes in all areas.  
 
That being said. My sister lives in a rural area and was expecting a parcel purolator said they delivered it but they didn't. the signature was not correct. It took a lot of arguing back and forth between company, courier and her husband.  
 
When spring came, the parcel was found by a farmer in the ditch near his place. Apparently the delivery person couldn't be bothered finding address and tossed it out and signed it himself. Not sure if he was fired but probably was.

This lady used her empty amazon boxes for her cat litter, taped it back up and set it out on her porch for those thieves!!!! Good idea for any porch pirates in your area!

I like the used litter idea, but mark rober takes it a step further.  
 
I'm still waiting for one that contains a claymore mine, until then we have to settle for fine glitter, fart spray and mild embarrassment/fame on youtube.
