I have been looking on the internet trying to find out Brandon's present population. The look has been very frustrating in the sense that the numbers are all over the place. I found one site that indicated the population was only around 26,500: obviously wrong. The city site indicates our population of just around 48,000 to 49,000.  
The amount of traffic increase seems to me that the population has grown exponentially.  
I found another site that stats Canada puts out and it is quite a bit different. It show 2016 a population of 59849 to 2020 a population of 63188.

Why would you doubt the City of Brandon website?

follow stats Canada, I believe when we fill out those mandatory forms every few year really narrow it down to the population. But the way I have seen things.. as many people come to Brandon the same or more leave.  
 
 
City of Brandon is definitely not in the 48,000-49,000 range. We are in the 50,000 for sure.

As I had indicated in my initial post the numbers are all over the place. Who are you to believe. City of Brandon, Stats Canada or other posts that seem irrelevant? That is why I asked for other people's opinion. Thankyou for yours and the others.

I assume that you believe the City of Brandon and Stats Canada.  
 
The 2016 puts the city of Brandon at 48859, so if the City is saying between 48000 and 49000 then those two numbers coincide.  
 
If someone gives you the number of 58,003, that number is for the census agglomeration area, which includes the RMs of Cornwallis, Elton, Whitehead, and Oakland-Wawanesa. Allowing for population growth since 2016, the population will be over 49000, but we can only estimate until February. If we assume the same growth rate as between 2011 to 2016 of 6.1%, then the current population is 51839. 4 people. (That 0.4 of a person concerns me )  
 
I can't find that 63188 number, but it does ring a bell. Obviously that's for an even slightly larger area. As for traffic, Brandon has a situation where traffic and population don't correlate well, because the city's service area has over 180000 people. A good portion of the traffic is not "local"

The problem is that there is no official count for 2020. The City's number might be the best 'official' guess, but it's just that - a guess. The City actually has no way to do an accurate count of its population. Sounds ironic, but it's true. They don't have information on how many people live in each house, so what other 'records' do they have? They rely on the Census, which is the best (but still not perfect) count of a population. Of course, the last data released by Stats Can was from the 2016 Census, so from there, they project each year's population based on fairly good guesses of what the annual growth rate will be. But again, these are just guesses, so we won't know how close they are to the true number until the 2021 Census data is released. But in the meantime, I'd take the City's reported number as the best we will have for now. It may 'feel' like the city has grown 'exponentially' but that's hardly a better way to estimate than the official projections. (By the way, if the city grew 'exponentially', we would be in the billions by now... but I digress.)  
 
As for the difference, even in the 'official' numbers, the previous poster is correct. Stats Can most often reports the Brandon Census Agglomeration (CA) area, which i:ncludes the nearby Rural Municipalities - so while they aren't huge, together they account for the few thousand difference. Cornwallis alone has over 4,500. The "City of..." boundaries are strictly defined, so the population of the "City of Brandon" will be different from the population of the Brandon CA. The official 2016 population of the city was 48,859. From 2011 to 2016, we increased by 6.1% (total, not annual) so if we continued to grow at a comparable rate, we are likely approaching 52,000 by now. The 2016 population of the Brandon Census Agglomeration was 58,003.  
 
If you really need a more accurate number for 2020, I'm afraid there is nothing you can do about that. No such record exists. Even health data, while it might be very good, is imperfect.

Regarding traffic, don't forget that after nearly 2 years of Covid, return to "normal" traffic patterns will feel like an increase. Things are returning to normal. Hotel occupancy us way, WAY up compared to a year ago.  
 
This feels very much like what it used to be.

I have learned how to copy and paste the Stats Canada chart that shows the population they show for Brandon. This chat shows the changes in population over the period of 2016 thru to 2020. It is a chart of 5 columns . It requires the reader to go down the chart about half way and is just below Portage la Prairie. The chart is geographical and works from the east coast of Canada toward the west. The 2020 figures are in the range of 63,1888. We will see how accurate that is when the 2021 statistics are presented by the government agency.

Not Brandon, but very interesting to see that per below Canada is expected to have grown in population in 2021 more than *any* G7 nation including much larger USA. Who knows what that distribution is across the country, but wouldn’t be surprised if some of that ends up being reflected here where our cost of living is much more attractive than so many other areas and when we’re part of the rural immigration policy program:
