The Big Screen: Movies in the Theatre

There are those movies/films that are just magnificent when viewed in a theatre. I have a long list of favorites.
However, I am becoming increasingly discouraged to go to the movie theater when I think of the ear-splitting volume.
I'm wondering why this is? The rooms are not overly large.
