Which would be easier to learn how to drink? Have never cared for either but have friends that drink only one or the other. Is there something you could mix with them to ease into it or does it have to be straight up? Never hurts to try new things.

When I was a little too young I used to mix scotch with powdered Nestlé iced tea!

Great on the rock good starter even my barely legal kids love it without mix.

A good quality single malt scotch whiskey taken neat will be very smooth and drinkable.  
For a good less expensive blended scotch try Famous Grouse.

I like food cooked with bourbon but drinking it is a different story. Scotch tastes like some kind of cleaning product smell and bourbon like listerine. I did end up liking olives after all the years of hating them so anything is possible I guess.

My hubby and I did a virtual whiskey tasting with MLCC not too long ago. There was an Irish Whiskey, a Canadian Rye Whisky, an American Bourbon, and a Scotch Whisky. The scotch was very peat-y, smoky, like smoked leather. The Bourbon was much smoother, and sweeter. Not sure I could enjoy it just on ice, but I definitely preferred the bourbon. My favorite of the four was the Canadian Whisky.

Go buy a bottle of Dock 57 and try it cold, like keep it in the freezer cold, on ice. You'll be hooked and it goes down straight better than either Scotch or Bourbon. guaranteed...

If you are bound and determined to try Scotch go with Glen Garrioch. It's super smooth and doesn't have the bite cheaper scotch does.

Wrong way to enjoy either one. If you want to mix it then do so! Enjoy it your way, you don’t need to drink it straight. The more expensive brands tend to be smoother and there are many different taste profiles available, Bourbon is essentially whiskey, I’m not going to get into it here but take the time and do some research on each one and how they are made/stored. Good scotch is amazing if you find one that you like. Again, enjoy it your way!

Try bourbon and ginger ale. I like Bulleit myself.

If your getting into scotch I’d stay away from anything peated. It’ll ruin you for any thing else. I’ve been into bourbon in the last year it’s been quite the rabbit hole. I quite enjoy the sweet taste of the corn mash. I fine the flavors a lot easier to pick out than in a Canadian rye whiskey. As for how you drink it’s totally up to you. I prefer it neat, but I had to work up to it. Start with mixing it with water, then on the rocks. Price does matter, but you can find nice whiskeys in the $40-50. Do some research, there a lot of resources on you tube or apple podcasts. Have fun!! It can be addicting though, quite a fun hobby.
