Not sure how many people are aware but the mall will be open Good Friday and Easter Sunday this year. And most other holidays as well. Just my opinion but I don’t agree with it. We as a society do not need to be able to shop 365 days a year

So how do you get family's together anymore. You really have to plan as people need to ask for time off so you can get together. Some work weekends and some work weekdays. So is the mall management going to be working or do they get four days off?

I agree or disagree with the decision but seeing the last 2 years retailers have had they may want to take every opportunity to try and get their heads above water financially. In the past I think it’s up to the individual store if they want to open on a holiday?

Stores have been open in other provinces on these days for many years. And they find a way to function and have meals. It’s been like this at least 10 years if not more in Alberta. Not everyone celebrates religious holidays.
Personally I’m happy we have caught up with other provinces. It gives students extra days to make money as well. With prices of everything going up, making money is a priority.

and? No one is forced to shop on those days. Don't see myself there on those days but for those that need to its an option.

When I worked as a server and in retail I volunteered to work those days. You get paid time and a half and as a young person in college it was worth it. We can’t simultaneously complain that there aren’t enough jobs/wages aren’t high enough AND that businesses are offering more hours and opportunities to make more money.

Why should some religious beliefs/traditions determine when stores can and cannot be open?

It used to be a respect thing to allow store owners and staff a break and a little family time. In todays capitalist world peoples lives are so empty and shallow that the only way they are happy is if they can shop 365 and 24/7.

That is incredibly judgemental.

Not everyone has anything much to do (or anyone around to do things with!) during these holidays. Some welcome the opportunity for earning a buck when they would just be sitting around at home anyway. While not everyone will necessarily want to work on these days, most places i've worked at don't run into issues covering the shifts. People that want time off book off in advance, or people are open to working these days.

That the malls management will be off on Friday and Monday.

Personally, I want the mall closed but I’m biased as j work there. These last couple of years have taken so much time, energy, and even a bit of my soul from how hard things have been.
One of the things an accounting teacher taught me in college was ethics and how it applies to business. Basically, just because a business can do something, doesn’t necessarily mean they should do it.

You guys complain about every little thing. If you don’t want to work or can’t then book it off. If you can’t book it off well then quit and find a job somewhere else. Sometimes you have to work sometimes you don’t. If anything feel bad about all the people that “have” to work on say Xmas. I think now a days their is way more better things to complain about rather than working on Easter, you should just be thankful you have a job to pay the bills.

Just so all are on the same page, here are the facts on general holidays in Manitoba including details on pay (including time-and-a-half in most industries for those who do work):

The time of year is important to a lot of people including our family, but to me a lot of the idea of legislating family time via forced closures/time off was sorta settled when Manitoba moved its Sunday shopping rules closer to what the rest of Canada has been doing for quite a while. More trust was put in families and employers to find a way to make everything work within the diverse population makeup we have and I'm not sure I've heard about any kind of mass problems since we made that shift a year-and-a-half ago?

Our family makes a point of getting together on Easter weekend. I’m not religious. Some in the family are very much so. We find a way to make the best of the three days work depending on everyone’s schedule. In my own experience I can’t remember a time where someones employment got in the way of making it work. If a family member made the choice though to work to make that time-and a half pay, I certainly wouldn’t begrudge them that and we would do best to find a time that does line up for everyone.

I don’t want this to in any way be seen as an opinion on anyone’s beliefs because I've always made a point of respecting the different ways that folks find their happiness, but if for some there’s a religious undercurrent to the rules we’re expecting government to have in place in these cases this link gives an idea of the diversity we have in this country when it comes to religion and the proportion of Canadians who might say that “religious or spiritual beliefs were somewhat or very important to how they live their lives”:

That diversity and availability of people to pick up various shifts that work for them I think goes a long way towards making sure we have a workforce that supports businesses being open.

In the spirit of family and togetherness, IMO in stead of trying to impose one’s own priorities on others or businesses we’re so much better to avoid these online fights every year and find best ways to co-exist and support each other in a country with such a wide set of priorities, beliefs, financial positions and shopping needs.

On a less serious note but still tied into the original topic.... fun little Easter selfie display inside the mall in the Kia court area. Didn't catch what it was for, but tied in with that is some sort of draw that seemed to have quite a few people filling out entries too!

Not really judgemental. I used to be on call 24/7 to cover breakdowns and it sucks.

Being someone who has worked in the mall I can say that most stores will probably lose money by being open.
As for mall management, they definitely won’t be there but they should. If they want stores open, one of them should be on site as well

Technically I wasn’t complaining I was just stating the facts that are there for people that have to work those days. Also stating the facts that they’re are a lot people worse off then that. So I guess take it how you want it… front or rear your choice lmao!!!

should be left to the business. Telling a business they can't open because of a one religions beliefs is not right. Not everyone follows that religion and many don't follow any religion. If a business has workers who want to work, so be it. For many business they don't pay for stat days. Don't work, don't get paid.

Christmas has become pretty much a generic holiday like Labour Day. Enrolls religious and non-religious celebration.

The reality though is that some of those retail businesses will force employees to work over those holidays. Quite often employees will feel compelled to work when they would rather not for fear of losing their job.

Kinds off topic.. but its the same with Remembrance Day, other provinces work their regular hours. When 11am comes around, everyone stands and has a moment of silence and that's it.

Here, we can't anything open until 1pm, and people actually want to work a whole day. People are loosing wages by not working the whole day.

I have always been of the mind that remembrance day should be all or nothing. You are either closed, or you are open. Its always been eye-opening that stores used to stay closed for almost every other religious occasion, yet only half the day on what is supposed to be the most sacrosanct day of the year.

It sounds like money is more important than family. We all need money I know. But once family is gone it’s to late. I guess it is coming to have stores open 24 hours 7 days a week. If that happens to stores then why can’t management in the stores or malls and government have people working and not have 4 day weekends as people can rotate working. As I have worked on call for years. Years back stores were closed for a couple of days a week and they still made a profit. Things have sure changed. I take family time over work any time. But everyone has their own opinion.
