For the second time in just over two months, a boil water advisory is in place for part of Brandon. How is the city communicating these notices?

How are notifications sent out to the Brandon area? I wasn’t aware of this.

Precisely! I found out at 1030 at night when my daughter let me know. She lives in CALGARY! Unless you're glued to social media 24/7 you have no way of knowing. The city has dropped the ball twice on this issue. They have to come up with some kind of a solution so that everyone that's impacted by these advisories are informed.

Imo every municipality should have a simple text alerts system and/or an app based push notification system for these urgent issues, pretty much identical to what Environment Canada uses for weather. Would need to build the database that people opt into but I’d think most that live in a city would want emerg notifications the minute they’re issued rather than finding out hours later through word of mouth, etc.

Boil Water Advisory Rescinded

October 21, 2022

Brandon, MB - The City of Brandon wishes to inform residents and businesses that the boil water advisory that was put in place for a portion of the city from south of the Assiniboine River to Richmond Avenue, west of 18th Street, has been rescinded by the Medical Officer of Health.

The Brandon water system has met all conditions for rescinding the boil water advisory and the distribution water sample testing results have met regulatory standards, including:

One set of ten (10) bacteriological tests in the affected area submitted with results meeting regulatory standards:

Compliance with directives issued by the Office of Drinking Water or Medical Officer of Health

If residents or businesses have questions, they can contact the City of Brandon Water Treatment Facility during business hours at 204-729-2190. If water is discoloured at the tap, residents can flush their lines by running water until it is clear.

That's a great idea and would be better than what is in place now. It does leave some (note I said some) of our older population, that don't use that technology, out of the loop. There are also others that don't have the option of that technology.

A text alert, as well as a system like Environment Canada uses over Phone TV and radio for emergency situations is as likely to reach as many citizens as possible.

Our own city emergency alerting system could also be used, but if it happened on the first Wednesday of the month in the late afternoon some might not pay attention.

If you want the City to know your contact information, would you, and everyone else be happy knowing that a government entity has all that information stored in one place? There are privacy laws in place, and setting up a database for a system is not easy, or cheap.
