As always, never send any funds or personal information of any kind in followup to an ad without meeting in person as online scams do exist. This does include the rental section where someone conducting a scam may use a listing from elsewhere online to falsely advertise a rental listing that they don't have access to. The notice at this link is on every rental ad posted but it can never be repeated enough as part of educating to make sure that those reading are as aware as possible.
Alongside user education, knowing about and removing as soon as possible is critical and so if you ever notice one please click on the "report" link that corresponds to the ad on the website as OP has indicated they had the instinct to do. It might be human nature to assume someone else will do the reporting of it in stead, but I can truly never get enough reports and if you see an ad that you question the legitimacy of your reporting it will go a long way towards identifying and addressing as quickly as possible.
