Curious question for people who feed birds:  
Do black birds or grackles eat peanuts in shell ?  
Put some out for blue jays, and no show, but do have a bird that is black, visiting every day, and do find the empty shells of peanuts scattered on balcony.  
Curious , is it blackbird or grackle , or both ?

Since they are leaving pieces of shells lying around close by, it's probably grackles. Grackles will eat the peanut, but also chew on the shells. Whereas any blue jays I've ever fed always pick a peanut and then fly away to eat it somewhere else and don't tend to eat the shells.  
 
I feed peanuts inthe shell all year round, but grackles tend to dominate my feeding area in spring / summer. I have many blue jays in the winter and fall. If you feed peanuts in shell (or out of the shell) you may also get woodpeckers and nuthatches (I do). Hope that helps!

Yes, thank you. Have come to conclusion, they are grackles: wasn't aware they also like peanuts.
