The City of Brandon has declared a State of Local Emergency in response to anticipated flood conditions resulting from significant rainfall throughout the Assiniboine and Shellmouth River basins and continued increases in forecasted river levels.
Provincial flood forecasts indicate that water levels on the Assiniboine River are expected to begin rising in the coming days, with peak flows anticipated near July 12th. The declaration provides the city with additional authority and flexibility to respond quickly to evolving conditions, protect critical infrastructure, safeguard property, and ensure public safety in a proactive manner.
The city's Emergency Operations Centre remains fully activated and continues to coordinate flood response efforts across municipal departments and with provincial agencies, emergency services, and local partners. Flood protection measures, including the temporary dike closure at Grand Valley Road and 18th Street, have already been completed as part of ongoing preparedness activities.
"This declaration allows us to take the necessary actions to protect our community as we prepare for the forecasted rise in river levels," said Mayor Jeff Fawcett. "While there are currently no evacuation orders in place, we are taking a proactive approach to ensure the safety of residents and to maintain essential municipal services.
The city is asking residents to remain vigilant and stay informed through official communication channels. Residents are reminded to:
-Stay away from the dike system and all closed trails, parks, pathways, and riverbank areas.
-Respect all barricades, closures, and warning signs.
-Avoid driving or walking through flooded areas.
-Monitor City of Brandon updates for changing conditions and safety information.
-Be prepared for potential disruptions should weather or flood conditions worsen.
Several flood mitigation and preparedness measures remain underway, including enhanced monitoring of river conditions, protection of municipal infrastructure, deployment of flood response resources, and coordination with emergency responders.
The city will continue to assess conditions daily and provide updates as new information
becomes available.
For the latest flood information, residents are encouraged to follow the City of Brandon's
website, social media channels, and official public advisories
