Cycling: Where do I belong
5/30/2009 at 8:28 PM
I was reading some discussions on people riding their bikes on the sidewalks. I was riding my bike to work one fine evening tooting along my merry way. Ill stop your thoughts right now and say that I follow the rules, and treat my bike as a if Im driving a car. I was on the corner of 9th and Pacific when a car came darting out. Im sure he seen the big red stop sign or at least gave a glance towards it, but continued a rolling pause and kept going almost hitting me. Now when I say rolling stop I mean he was still doing 30km. Then he looks at his passenger and gives me the finger and laughs. I did get to work alive, did a couple hrs and started back towards home. I was on 26th street and came to a red light at the intersection of 26th and Victoria. A woman driving a van basically pushed me onto the sidewalk to make a right hand turn. She was of course on the cell phone and waving me over with the other hand i would have hoped was on the sterring wheel. I Wondered to myself if she needed to get home to the season final of some reality show. So from there on i continued home on the sidewalk because it was safer that night. I blocked all this out in my head when I was out tonight with my wife riding. We were on 6th street and an old man honked at us for being on the road. We are very careful for watching for cars and maybe we were out a bit cause the parking lane had alot of cars on the street. Normally we stay to the parking lane as not to interupt traffic. So i just wanted to say that for some that have had issues with the people riding on the sidewalk there may just be more to it. bottom line Its just freaking safer to do so. Im not blaming all Brandon motorists in any way, but there are a few we need to watch out for.
