July mosquito count WAY down
8/5/2009 at 1:07 PM
While the weather this summer is a common concern amongst most Brandonites, there's one very very bright side. As most are I'm sure aware, we are dealing with a MUCH lower mosquito population in the Wheat City this summer.
To find out just how low I just got off the phone with the Parks Department, who are responsible for tracking the presense of the little buggers in our community.
Throughout the city, there are five traps that are used to do counts of mosquitos in the area. In July, 2008 there were an average of ten per trap. This year in July, there was an average of 0.3 (!!) per trap. For those that like math, for every swarm of 33 mosquitos last July there is just one single bug this year. Or you could say that there were 3333% more of the little vampires last July compared to this year.
The difference is being attributed to weather, spraying and/or summer larvasiding.
