yip yip yipping coyotes
9/1/2009 at 12:04 AM
I've just been sitting on the patio, in the dark, nursing the lawn sprnkler as well as a bedtime beverage.
I hear the yip yip yipping, the howling and the barking of coyotes off to the south, somewhere between Brandon and the Brandon Hills.
I hear this rural noise several nights every fall - it always reminds me of my growing up in a small rural Manitoba community: it reminds me of camping expeditions with my sons when I was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader: it brings back memories of crawling out of the tent at early dawn for pee and tripping over a coyote. Or a deer. Or a skunk.
The winsome noise the coyotes make affects me emotionally just a little, and after a bit I go in and ask my wife to listen at the almost always open computer room window
"Can you hear the coyotes?" I ask.
Of course she does, she says. She hears them every night, in the middle of the night, after her nightly trip to the bathroom after which she usually checks her facebook applications before returning to bed: and listens to the coyotes
Sigh ....
There's a lesson here, but I'm not sure what it is.
