Question re cell phones..

I know with Rogers you have a sim card for you phone and can buy a new phone and just swap the sim cards.... with MTS... if you were to buy a second hand phone online or somewhere can they swap your service over as well or do you have to seek out your contract and then get a new phone through them?? any information would help me greatly
