Interesting math in O'Connor column

I don't know if anybody else noticed this in James O'Connor's column today, but he made this observation on turning 50 in the next few days.
"Somewhere in my brain is nearly four decades of accumulated knowledge.
I'll start amassing the fifth decade on Monday."
So is he saying there was a 10-year period in his life during which not much knowledge compiling was going on?
