This is a sad day as the club closed its doors for the last time today. I don't get it. Curling is a life time sport and should be supported. With Wheat City closing are we left with enough venues to hold larger bonspiels. We now are left with only two clubs.

I was there yesterday for the last chance bonspiel and still can't believe that we're losing what, in my opinion, is the best curling facility in Brandon. With its closure, we're down to a dozen sheets serving the entire city, and I'm worrying about being able to find a local league night that works for my team next year. I already curl one night a week in Brookdale (which just built a new facility for its two sheets a couple of years ago) and I'm thinking that our team may end up curling in another of the smaller towns.  
 
On the flip side, I can understand that demographics are the core reason behind this. It's great to see young players still entering the sport, but there are nowhere near enough to make it sustainable even at current numbers. I love the game and I've been playing since I was about ten years old, but for whatever reasons it just doesn't compete with other winter-season sports.

For someone that doesn't know a whole lot about the local curling scene, can you confirm that this is the curling club that is/was in the Rec Centre? Any word on if they have other plans for the space?

I can confirm that is the club that was located at the Rec Centre. I can't confirm anything about the future of the facility though, as I'm not sure what is rumour and what is fact at this point. I'm not sure who you would contact for information, but it would be someone at the City.  
 
Something that definitely didn't help the club was that the threat of closure has hung over our heads for a number of years, driving away teams that probably would have continued curling there otherwise. There was definitely a feeling that the City wanted us out of there.

But, I also see, come October many ads in the paper for rinks wanted at the Brandon Curling Club and Riverview Curling Clubs. There are not as many curlers anymore, or if they are curling they usually join a club, but do not curl in a league at the club as they are on the money tour and all over the country.  
 
There is just so many things for young people to do now in regards to sports and curling always seems to be the last option. Too bad, it is one game that has great sportsmanship and anyone can try it.

School kids bring home notices for hockey, bowling etc but I have never seen anything come home from school about curling. If your child is interested you have to search little ads in the paper or get access 12. Maybe if they went into the schools and promoted curling it might grow.
