Workplace questions

Started working somewhere about three weeks ago...got hired on the spot and didn't sign any contracts or anything like that...I worked my hardest 8 or so hours and would be lucky to get my half an. hr break...than three weeks later they called me saying that customers been complaining about my work performance and they have to let me go...
Questions are:
1. Can they do that without giving a warning?
2. Is it illegal to begin work without signing a legal contract?
