A Calgary police officer used "lethal force" against a dog Friday afternoon.
It happened near the 1000 block of Coventry Drive and Coverdale Road N.E.
Police were responding to reports of a dog biting a woman in her 40's.
According to a witness, the attack by the rottweiler was sudden and unprovoked. "She was freaked out, was wheeling around and trying to get away from the dog. That's when I came back here to get a pipe and try to help out," says Shannon Pelham.
Pelham says before he could grab something to fend off the dog, police were on the scene.
The woman escaped from the dog's grip and that's when Pelham says the rottweiller lunged at a police officer.
The officer pulled his gun and fired at the dog. The dog ran away and the officer ran after it.
Witnesses say the officer faced off against the dog again in the yard of a vacant home.
Another shot was heard and the dog was dead.
The woman involved in the apparent attack was treated by paramedics at the scene.
Police say there will be an investigation into the incident. "Anytime a Calgary Police Service member discharges their weapon – outside of training or practice – internal affairs is called in to do the investigation," says Insp. Terry Larson.
Neighbours say this is not the first time the dog was running loose through the neighbourhood.
