My fiancee and I are looking to buy a house here in town, but the market is just terrible right now. There is nothing decent available for under $150,000 and we think it's crazy to spend any more money on a home than that when it is an old 40-60 yr old home. For $30,000 we could probably build brand new and finish the basement ourselves. Is anyone else looking to buy and having the same problems? The prices people are asking for their old delapadated pieces of junk is insane! Why would I pay $120,000 for something that needed: new windows, furnace, wiring/plumbing, stucco, central air, doors, drywall, flooring and the list goes on without even redecorating! You can spend $100,000 on reno's quite easily even when your doing alot of the work yourself. Some things have rebates like insulation and windows which is nice. I don't know how people rent when the rents are SO high either. Between $800-1200 a month. Thats ridiculous. How can low income wage earners and their families ever get ahead? Getting the down payment is not the problem, its the monthly $1600 mortgage that makes you house broke! Hope things look brighter for the spring
