Problems with IPod touch

has anyone had this problem, and if so, how was it fixed?
You can turn the IPod on and it stays on for about 20 seconds then turns off, and the only thing that is on the screen is the iTunes symbol, an arrow pointing up (underneath the symbol) and the USB cable under that.
I don't have the driver disc for it, so i am looking for the drivers online (it's not my IPod, and the owner doesn't have the disc either)
any help would be great
