Ducks in trees?

While walking the dog around Stanley Park this morning, I saw something that I have never seen before - two ducks (they had black heads with cool white stripes) sitting in a maple tree. They kind of jumped/flew from one tree to the next, and then eventually took off. They were definitely ducks (webbed feet), duckbill mouths, etc.
Is this unusual? Is it normal for ducks to be perching trees? I have never seen it before.
