Wheelchair access: A Beef and A Bouquet
7/26/2007 at 11:07 AM
Recently I had a 3 month leg injury that left me on crutches the entire time. It sure wasn't easy.
My observances during this time were rather shocking.
I sure have a new respect for those who have to deal with this stuff everyday of their lives. Sad that you have to have something tragic happen to open your eyes.
I was disgusted at a number of local department stores who only carried one wheelchair for public use.
Seemed everytime I went into the store it was already in use. So I left, they didn't get my business because of this.
My bouquet will go out to Walmart who not only had numerous amounts of wheelchairs and scooters but they also saw you coming through the door and jumped to have one ready for you. They would take my crutches and hold them for me until I was done shopping so I didn't have to cart them around. Now that's what I call customer service ! They got my business !
You wouldn't believe how many times I went into a store like a convenience store. (places that don't have the automatic doors) how many times people let the door shut in my face instead of helping me get through the door. Those doors are heavy!
Maybe those of us who do have use of our legs everyday could just take a moment out of our "busy" days to just remind our selves of what should be good manners and respect for others. It won't kill you to put your cell phone down for 2 seconds to help out a person in need.
To the neglectful stores maybe this is something you could consider for the future as everyone has a right to go shopping.
