In last Thursday's Brandon Sun there was an article about a violent robbery.
On 06 May 07 a 16 yr old knocked a man in his 20's off his bike and demanded everything he had. The man handed over $15. The attacker wasn't satified and threw the man into a garage door and kicked him in the head resulting in a broken nose. The attacker then relieved the man of his cell phone / wallet and glasses.
Police arrived after being called by a witness and caught up with the attacker within a block or two. During the apprehension, the suspect kicked one of the cops in the stomach.
After being charged he was released.
On 14 May 2007, the suspect was found in a taxi by police intoxicated an in possession of 2 extasy pills. He was released on 22 May 2007
On 19 June 2007, he was arrested for being at an unauthorized location.....guess what....released
12 Aug 2007 arrested for being intoxicated and looking for a fight outside a bar.
The story appeared in the paper on 23 Aug 2007 so I'll assume they kept him locked up for 10 days
The sentence - 40 days deferred custody....translation...stay at home for 40 days young man you're grounded.
I don't know if it's the way the laws are written, the way they are interpreted, overcrowding in jails or what.
I read this article in the paper three times and still can't believe how the "system" allows violent acts like this to be committed with no penalty. There needs to be deterrents to make these people think before they act and they way the system is noe I don't believe there is
