Red Light Runners
12/4/2007 at 6:52 PM
I was listening to a report on CBC radio this morning that said that people seem to be more likely to run red lights during poor driving conditions.
When I was out driving today, I also noticed a number of vehicles shooting through intersections on yellows while going at a pretty good speed. I even saw some go through when the lights had already turned red. In most cases, it seemed that the vehicles didn't even try to slow down, and actually sped up.
A few years ago, you might recall that a woman was killed at 18th and Richmond a few days before Christmas when her car was struck by a truck that had sped up trying to make it through on the yellow (which turned red before he got through the intersection). The death of that woman was devastating for her family.
I guess what I am saying is pretty obvious. When the light turns green, I look both ways, just to make sure that somebody isn't blasting through the intersection. Given the kind of drivers I saw out there today, I think it's a good idea.
I just can't understand why snow-covered, icy roads bring out the recklessness in some drivers.
