Current Council...To keep, or not to keep
12/13/2007 at 1:49 AM
With so much public outcry with current city council based on newspaper articles and E-Brandon posts, especially with the fire hall issue, I came up with an idea (thanks in part to another E-Brandoner who posted this on the fire hall thread), however, I cannot really take charge of it because I am a FORMER Brandonite who was lucky enough to move to a better, more progressive city. We'd need someone local who is willing to step up and do this.
It seems, especially with the fire hall, that many city residents are not happy with the current mayor and council. One poster recommended a petition calling for the resignation of council. This has indeed worked before in many jurisdictions, and I think if enough signatures are gathered it can work here.
I for one would love to get rid of current council. I'm proud to say all but two people I voted for last year did NOT get into office (Bea Jolly and Jim Murray got into the div), so I have every right (even as a former resident) to complain about current council...I voted. My family lives in Brandon...Brandon will always be my home...But I never want to come back careerwise, especially knowing that my working dollars will get wasted on consultants, expropriations, repaving of roads, consultants, redesigned cop cars, and consultants.
I left because education is poor in Brandon, job/career choosings are poor in Brandon, taxes are outrageously wasted, and Brandon is not vibrant-young people get bored quick. I found Saskatoon to have a much better quality of life. I miss Brandon, but the way things are going with my hometown council's decisions, I'll never move back.
Even though I am a former Manitoban, I am officially calling for Brandon City Council's resignation from office and a fresh early election. I have a strong feeling based on their current actions, several seats would change hands.
It'd be nice to put this in petition form, and it'd be better for someone local to get it going. I'd definitely put my name on it (By the way, I'd put Bruce Kozak, not Spongebobmang!). If anyone decides to put the effort into this, let me know, I'd help.
Just for a quick poll, should current city council STAY, or GO? One-word answers preferred, but if you want to put a reason to your decision, go nuts.
