Braces for kids - shop around
3/19/2008 at 9:59 AM
I just posted a message about people being overcharged for their glasses. There's another subject that is near and dear to my heart lately - braces for kids.
My wife and I recently learned that both of our kids need braces. Well, it really wasn't a shock that they needed braces, but the cost sure was - almost $6,000 for the two of them. 'Shocked' doesn't adequately convey how we felt.
We called around the province to see if this was the "going rate" for braces and discovered that it isn't. Not even close.
Our kids will be getting their braces in Dauphin in a few weeks for slightly more than half the price we were quoted in Brandon. Now it is almost entirely covered by our health insurance plan.
We could have also gotten the braces cheaper in Winnipeg. Not as cheap as Dauphin, but cheaper.
When we told my daughter's teacher about our sticker shock, she told us that lots of her student have gone to Dauphin for braces over the years, with no complaints or problems.
Moral of the story - shop around. Ask questions. It's your money.
