I know there have been warning posts about the scam. But how EXACTLY does it work. My mom is being scammed. "He's over seas and will send money through paypal and his agent will pick it up." I get the scam. But how do I explain how it happens (never used paypal) She doesnt think its a scam because she is getting the money through paypal and will take out the money before his agent picks it up... PLEASE HELP!

im not sure how they do it with paypal usually its a check which is a fraud, even a etransfer you can cancel  
 
my question is why would she go that far out of her way to "help" this person?

done any transaction but he keeps emailing and she keeps saying cash only and hes really annoying. so I want to be able to fully understand it. Shes a hard headed mom.. trying to help her out lol

Probably will send more money, with the extra to be transferred to the agent via western union. the agent will not show up, the payment will be fraudulent, and you will be out the wire transfer money. They will send fake emails, that make it look like paypal. They might be looming to get her account info. Have her log into a site that lookslike paypall.

I'm sure that's it. The paypal site will be fraudulent.  

One of the common ones is they offer you asking price then they "all of a sudden" find out the agent needs money to ship and pay for his services so they offer to send extra to pay that too cause the buyer cannot send money other than PayPal. You get an email saying you received a payment, (it looks real but it's fake) it states the payment will not be released until you send a confirmation receipt that the agent has been paid. (Usually through western union) they want you to send them your money because you think you've been paid already. Once you send the money and try to release the funds you find out there's nothing. They got the $200, $600 or whatever

Was taken in by a Paypal scam. You will get an email that looks like it came from PayPal, verifying that you have received a payment. But it is fake. And by the time you realize it, your merchandise is gone and you have no payment.  

There is anothe paypal scam out there where the buyer pays the money into the paypal account and the item is suppose to be picked up so no receipt is issued. The buyer then says they overpaid, or changed there mind on the item so the seller refunds the buyer the money. the buyer says the item was not received so paypal refunds the money to the buyer so they get double the money you loose out the cosst of the item and the cost of the refund or overpayment. The web site is fake for the refund or overpayment. I have been selling on Ebay and dealing with Paypal for years. If in doubl call Paypal and ask. Paypal has never asked me to update my account and I know if I receive funds not expected it is not true. I get them from Australia all the time. If your mom wants to talk to me PM me. how can tell from fake paypal website or an incoming paypal email. What are we supposed to look for to difference the fake from real paypal.

Don't use a link to paypal from someone the sent it in an email. Only use paypal from the official www.paypal.com/ca web page. Paypal purchases that you make from the official site will be fine. Anyone who asks for money from YOU so they can purchase an item from YOU seems pretty sketchy to me.

But when I pay through Paypal, I have always done so through the site. When I have received money I have always been sent a notification email, but again always accessed through the site to move it around.
