Does this mean she will need to step down as councilor to run for the Liberal seat?

Wasn't she also representing a different political party?  
 
If she runs against Caldwell and Isleifson with the current party of the day (federally), what happens to the ward she committed to? Does it mean a by election at taxpayers expense?  
 
 

That's going to be one heck of a race. The riding is as historically NDP as it gets, yet you have two challengers that each also have recent history of resonating with folks in the area. I know we have some posters who already have their horse in the race be it for party loyalty reasons or otherwise, but early thoughts on how the vote might split and how it having Hamilton on the ballot might effect what the other two candidates might have otherwise seen for support?

are obviously popular in the east end as all have been elected to serve that area.  
 
I guess it will come down to what political party we want to elect in Brandon East.

Vanessa needs to make up her mind on who she is and what she represents instead of running for anything and everything. Now she will expect Brandon voters to vote for her in Provincial politics while we pick up the tab to replace her as city Councillor. What has she done for Brandon residents so far? She knew full well that we are having a Provincial election next year so why bother running for city council at all. This is not the kind of politician I want for Brandon E. Shameful!  

liberals have been pretty weak in Manitoba as far back as I remember. its too bad jodi wyman couldn't have taken the run provincially now for the liberals as that would have been a real contender for them in my opinion. if it was just brandons votes cunted for the Brandon/souris federal riding she likely would have gotten in federally.  
 
maybe next time around.  
 
I think Vanessa may steal some votes but from which of the of the two is totally up in the air. neither pallister or selinger seem to be stand out contenders for the premiers job as it sits right now, and how many people on ebrandon can honestly tell me who the liberal leader is (I honestly cant remember right now lol)

Vanessa is just trying to climb the corporate ladder to quickly and may get dumped from everything. I would say she is thinking after this federal election the Liberals have a chance and she wants to be first out of the gate.

being an opportunist! And we have enough of those kind in Politics!  

Party flip floppers are very interesting.  
They'll do whatever it takes to get to the top. Since the Cons (federally) and the Dippers have taken a bit of a beating, might as well flop over to the political party of the day.  
 
I've no respect for whomever follows their original political stripe and will just fly over to another party for the sake of election.  
 
Does this by-election cost the City of Brandon taxpayers?

The Bi Election will put the City of Brandon on the hook for at least $11,000. Will Vanessa pay that bill? Doubt it.

resign her council seat BEFORE becoming a candidate in the upcoming election. I hope she has already done that!

I think you are correct. A similar situation occurred a number of years ago where Jim McCrae held a position provincially and had to give it up to run federally. (I may be off on which direction the change was) There is no fallback to the old position if you lose. It's a risk.

Rick Borostik had to resign as Mayor before running in a federal election. Luckily he won that seat.

I like Vanessa personally and am not surprised that she wants to take on this challenge. That being said, I personally wish she had waited and served more than this one year of her term. I expressed the same issues with Len Isliefson in my column.  
If I'm Len, I think this would make me feel quite positive. A resurgent Liberal party would most likely take votes away from the NDP. This is what was happened prior.

I'm not sure that just because the Libs had such a good showing across Canada means that the provincial Libs will get the same support. That's a huge risk to take.  
 
At least with Caldwell and Isleifson they stand for their respective parties, passionately!

I'm not sure that Justin Trudeau has coat-tails that will fall all the way to Brandon. Maybe?!

whether you like islefson or not at least he had the class to not run in the municipal election and require a byelection before the end of the term. he would tend now to get my support thanks to this

When she changed parties. I suspect this will be a question often asked.

In fact, I've known Len for years and like him quite a bit. The same is true of Drew, in fact. If I recall, didn't Len fail to serve his entire term as councillor and instead sought the Tory nomination?  
I have no real position on this -- I'm literally asking for information.  
There is nothing wrong with ambition, although as I originally posted, I would have preferred Vanessa serve longer than one year.

I'm not sure if Vanessa has done the right thing for herself by switching loyalties to the Liberals. Traditionally, rural Manitoba is either NDP or Conservative provincially, and Conservative federally.  
 
Since the 1960's, the only time the Libs have had any success provincially was in 1988 when Sharon Carstairs led the party to a shocking finish as the Official Opposition with 20 seats to Filmon's PC party's 25 seats.  
 
I think the Liberals might have a slim chance to gain some ground in Winnipeg, but out here in the boonies, I can't see Vanessa having a snowball's chance in you-know-where running on a Liberal ticket.

Of the 84 polls located within Brandon, Liberal candidate Jodi Wyman captured 61, according to Elections Canada data. The candidates tied in two Brandon polls. In the rural areas, Conservative incumbent Larry Maguire secured all but one poll — Oak Lake Reserve — which went to Wyman.

Just for clarification purposes so people don't need to guess, my term on council ended with the October 22, 2014 Municipal Election after a full term on council. I had the extreme pleasure of ending my term as Deputy Mayor and working hard for the residents of Riverview and the City of Brandon.  
 
I believe in fiscal responsibility and therefore, did not run in the 2014 municipal election because I was already looking forward to the Brandon East PC Association nomination held on June 12, 2015.

Vanessa - your hopping on the coat tails of popularity - you may be educated and a salesperson smile -- but this politician field takes more than that - you need to focus on either the rate payers who voted you in and trusted you to be a 4yr councillor -- if you want to proceed - I'd suggest giving up your seat immediately so that someone that is going to concentrate on city affairs can fill it . Do the right thing - out of respect to the ones who voted for you

I was a supporter of vanessa in the civic election but am very disappointed to see her not fulfill her term. Her facebook says she will step down in March. I say leave now and lets find someone who's heart is in representing Riverview. Dont count on my support this time around.

I agree with you. She was lucky to finally get a councillor term now she's looking to advance her career in provincial politics. She should stay municipal and get some experience. Make a decision and stick with it.
