We live In an apartment building and we need to get rid of a couch. We've put it on sites for free to no avail and we have no way to bring it to the dump. Am I allowed to put it in the dumpster? Or will I get in trouble for that

Well you could try the dumpster, but I'd make sure no one sees you because it's not really kosher.  
 
You can go down to city hall to buy a bulky item disposal ticket. Once you buy the ticket you call a number and the city comes to pick it up off the curb.

You could call the Brandon Community Builders store. They pick up on Saturdays. 204-717-9900

my land lord freaked out over having cardboard put in the bin. They returned it to the person who was moving.

People around our apartment always do that and fills the bins right up and then everyone just throws the garbage near the bin since they can't get it in and it looks absolutely disgusting. Please don't do this!

dont put your couch in a dumpster, the bins aren't big enough and not designed for that and a real dumpster are paid for by the people who want them so if you put it in a business dumpster you are stealing and causing issues for the business who pays for the service however i assume you were not aware you could buy a ticket from the city to take the couch off your hands and i hope thats the route you went

the op was talking about an apartment dumpster, have you ever seen some of the stuff that goes into one of those? I remember from years ago when the city provided those huge metal containers.  
 
Getting rid of refuse is a whole lot better that a couch sitting in a back lane for weeks upon weeks. Yes, it does still happen! Not sure why our city is so bad for letting accumulated refuse/garbage litter our streets for eons.

they were refering to apartment bins. But irreguardless, items like that can still cause damage to the trucks.

Thats part of the reason the city switched to the small wheeled bins
