I don't necessarily think that disqualifies you from finding work.  
 
Although I strongly believe that the best qualified person should be the primary criteria by which an employer fills a position, regardless of race, I don't think that this should be a problem for you if you are a motivated and qualified worker.  
 
Not applying for a job because there might be other people competing doesn't seem like a reasonable reason to not try.

The above is put on almost all applications due to not discriminating. Of course it is worth your time to fill out the application is you are serious about getting a job.

i honestly believe in thos day and age the type of comment on the job posting isnt needed anymore and until they stop putting it on there will always be this type of divide, the healthy white male feels discriminated against and it IS segregating people into categories based on race ect thus making the target groups a noticeable aspect of the hiring process where i thought the object was not to notice these things  
 
it happens with all groups we give special rules too when if we want to be the same and then everyone should be the same, fall under the same laws and rules and the same hiring criteria

What I think too. And of course I am still applying for jobs it is just in this day and age why are those preferences still even mentioned, after all it is 2015 like someone else mentioned just awhile ago.

i have always thought this and i am a female in a male dominated industry yet i still always felt i should get the job on merit because honestly if i dont then no one at works likes me and i feel incompetent, which because of my attitude has never happened lol  
 
if it makes you feel better i did think being one of the "minority" groups only gets you the job over the non minority person when there is need for a deciding factor, or that is how it should be

I agree, it should not be needed anymore on applications, but it is. To be honest, i just skip over that little blurb on an application and carry on. I am sure we are not that nieve to think they actually follow the practice.  
 

I cant believe that would even be acceptable. So what if I were to post a job listing stating " preference will be given to "Non visible minorities".

I am almost your age. (I sometimes don't want to check 'certain boxes' for fear of being judged)  
I too am looking for work.  
I have been turned down in the last four interviews. I am sure my appearance was clean, breath was fresh, and teeth were white enough! I more than qualified for these cleaning, caretaking and maintenance jobs as I have 20 years+ experience. I am thinking there may be a large stack of resumes in this area for said positions? My former position was cut when the company I worked for downsized, and my position became basically obsolete when some of our buildings sold or were taken over.  
I am interested in property managing, commercial or apartments. I have experience with cleaning, painting, plumbing, electrical, and light carpentry, snow removal and landscaping. (All facets of building management from tenant relations to showing suites, deposits, etc.) I have also done delivery/courier work. I have a perfect driving abstract.  
If anyone knows a place that may be looking for an able bodied-guy, charming, with great sense of humour , send me a message. Great character and employer references. Thanks.

I think that what it means is, with all other things being equal, the aboriginal, minority or disabled person will get the job. However, if you are better qualified, the job should be yours. The minority bit is to "break a tie" so to speak.

Wasn't wanting your sympathy was more less wondering why that line of preferences is even listed any more because if you go to any mall in Winnipeg or any other major city there dosen't seem to be any visible minorities any more there is a large mix of every nationality under the sun.

Its also not there to discourage its there to encourage those who might not think they have a chance to apply.

is that personal opinion or ??? i honestly am not sure anymore if the average white male has more privilege then the rest of us or the tables have turned so much that everyone else gets away with picking on them and thus we are doing to them exactly what we preach was wrong for them to do to us for years and thats sad imo

Seriously? It only takes a few minutes of looking at Google to find plenty of examples and studies of the benefit of being a white male. Careers for example, white males rank fairly high on getting a job over other nationalities in the US. (Canada would be similar traditionally). Renting housing as a Caucasian is far easier than other nationalities. Why do you think we have laws against discrimination? Because they're needed! If it wasn't still an issue to try and bring equality in the work force then they wouldn't need to say preference given to minorities etc.

I'm pretty sure that if I were to run a job ad and stated "Preference will be given to persons who aren't Aboriginal, a visible minority, and persons with a disability" that I would be facing discrimination charges.  
 
There is a definite double standard.

we are not American and if you have traveled extensively as i have in the south you wouldn't compare these statistics to what is experienced in Canada  
 
so anyway i did look through google for statistics of white male privilege and i did only come up with us states, because its google lol, but i also didnt come up with any reputable states on white male privilege, all i came up with, within the first few pages was feminist views, i also come up with a few counter views that i found interesting but they are still just someones perception and that is what i question, our perception, we have been told white males get everything and hey sometimes they do triumph but when was the last time you saw a average white male in a government office? when was the last time you were told you couldnt have the job because you were black, a woman ect? its been years for me so while i was discriminated against years ago i havent experienced that in over 15 years, i have also not seen people not get rentals or be turned down for house loans based on their race ect so imho it is time we do away with affirmative action type policies before we have turned into them

Apparently you didn't look hard enough. Huffington post, etc. Has done articles on it. Again if it wasn't necessary to create laws requiring companies to hire minorities, aboriginals, etc. Then they wouldn't force it.

To support your claim?

no work! From what I hear from a lot of construction owners the construction industry sure have problems to find canadian workers wanting to do physical work not sit on a chair with a laptop checking the clock for 5 pm.  
I know one construction owner hires more immigrants.

Post yourself as a minority. Or member of a demographic. And call them on discrimination when they find your out just another whitey. Like, white men are becoming the scorge f the laboratory market. It took me nearly two months to find part time employment. If only I was a member of the "less fortunate" population.

Go to google, type in huffington post white privilege. From there you'll find plenty of articles about the issue.

Read the other posts or be a minority and see where you stand or how hard it is to find work.
