They don't need a reason, they just put it up when they think they need extra cash. The worst station for pushing up the price is Petro Canada at 26th and Victoria. Saw they were up to 93.9 this am

Is also 93.9, just boycott those stations.

What Marlene is trying to say is that although the CDN $ is down a cent and oil is down $3 or $4 there is no reason to raise a litre of gas 6 cents  
 
It has been pretty obvious over the years watching what Petro Canada on 26th and Shell on 18th are doing by being the first to raise the price.  
 
That's why I would never buy gas from either one of them.

Let's throw out a whole bunch of things and look at retail price in North Dakota, which has both state and federal prices added to it, then convert those prices to Canadian dollars per litre. Yesterday the conversion was about 69 cents per litre Canadian, add the GST to that price and in relative terms we are paying pretty big prices.

Here is a link to a report regarding gas prices and taxes. If you look at page 6 and look at Manitoba. It uses a pretax market price of 93 cents and after all the taxes the final pump price is $1.24 . That is 24% in taxes.  
 
With governments loosing millions in taxes with the drop in oil prices and in Manitoba the provincial debt going up over 90% in the last 10 years we are lucky that the prices are as low as they are. One stoke of a pen and they can increase the price of gas with increased taxes.

Guess I should have looked first, but according to this website, it's 23 cents per usg.

it was reported in the news a few days ago that the price of Western Canadian Blend oil was below $20US. That's what the refineries in western Canada pay.

The information here is from May 2013 when oil was over $100 a barrel. Provincial taxes are based on $0.14 per litre and that tax hasn't changed. So since the value of that barrel of oil is down around $32 today I would not think that we should be paying $1.24 a litre, but maybe $0.75 per litre.  
 
So maybe we can't always blame taxes for the high cost but oil companies charging whatever they want, as they have the monopoly

My price of gas was from an American site which quoted the average price of each state for the day, the price quoted by that site was $1.90. Prices down there are likely the same as up here, some places higher some lower, thought using average price would be fair. As for exchange rates, I am able to buy things on my credit card with no exchange fees, so I used the price of .71 as the exchange price, which converts into $1.4084, didn't check my math so there could be a mistake.

The information is from 2013 but how gas is taxed has not changed. The price has changed but taxes are a big percentage of the end cost.  
 
Totally agree that they can change what ever they want and thinking governments are going to pressure them to do anything else is crazy.  
 
Enjoy the prices while they last as there will be more upside than down in my opinion.

Everyone had expected to production to really drop because of lower prices, but so far that hasn't happened, and although there was a drawdown on US inventories this week production is still exceeding demand. There are certain people who believe that when the economy quits staggering the price will go up, my concern about the economy, globally speaking, is that it likely will not quit staggering, and may actually fall down. Prices are likely going to fall into the lower 20's and remain there for an extended period given how many countries have tied their horse to this cart.

Petro-Canada on Vic and 34th still at 87.9 as of 10 mins ago. Most others are already changed to 91.9

that link takes you to Fargo ND prices which are less yet at $1.62 a gallon which converts to $0.64 cents CDN including the GST. However at the top of the link you can put in Rugby or whatever for the city and you will get the recent price.  
 
The thing is if the oil companies continue to keep the price high it will be easier for them to raise the price higher than it ever has been when oil does go up.

If Winnipeg gas price jumps Brandon follows them. With any luck price will come back down a bit as Edmonton is still 80 cents. Usually if Edmonton stays low Manitoba doesn't stay up for a long time.

Last I drove by (about 4:40pm today) the 26th St and Victoria Ave Petro-Can was back down to 87.9.

Maybe I worded that wrong . My suggestion meant the price of gas will go up before it will go down. Oil may drop more as in my opinion and others that that the oil rich Saudis are pumping oil into the system to squeeze out oil supplied from sources like the oil sands. To ramp up oil sands production takes a long time so they are trying to eliminate the competition.  
 
I would agree that the world economy is on shaky ground. Time will tell.

In a way gas prices can act independently from oil, oil production worldwide has increased,but the capacity of refineries has basically remained the same and very few new refineries are being built. Gasoline or other distillates are traded worldwide and there is a lot of product that is imported whether people want to believe it or not.  
 
We are going through some real interesting times right now and the markets in the last few days certainly reflect that.

There are three major organizations that control supply lines of oil right from the ground to refining to pumps. They run Esso, Shell and Petro-Can. Since the price of oil has tanked, they aren't making any money on the supply end. Therefore, they raise the end price of gas to the consumers to make up for the shortfall. Basically, we're paying for the low oil prices so these companies can keep profits high. If they didn't control multiple stages of the supply chain, we wouldn't be paying the higher prices.

I see on Gasbuddy prices in Winnipeg and Portage have dropped down to 83.4 price in Brandon is still 91.9

Is now at 74.9.. Even Austin is 85.9

Co-op on 18th street at 83.9

I am curious as to why it is the Brandon gas stations that always remain the highest across the prairies--Calgary prices are 69.9-74.4, Saskatoon's are 71.4-74.9, Regina's are 69.9-74.4, Moosomin's are 84 and Winnipeg's are 74-78 and we here in Brandon are still sitting at 91--these other places have changes their prices last week-are the gas station owners that greedy in this town?

Prices should drop even more now that the sanctions have been lifted against lran. You wil also see the loonie drop as well. Time to tighten the purse strings again. That is one thing all of Canadians know how to do make do in tough times. IMO.

I have been keeping a graph of the fuel prices since Nov last year. I have three graphs. Brandon pump price (gas buddy), rack price (Shell in Wpg, & the margin. (Selling price minus purchase price). The  
margin does not take into account the cost of trucking the fuel from Wpg. I have been told that our fuel comes from Regina. Their rack price is 1 cent a litre less than Wpg. Out of the margin the station has to pay all expenses,wages overhead etc.  
The average margin for Nov was 13.92 cents per ltr. In Dec it was 6.01 cents per ltr. Today it is 21.72 cents.  
The rack price today was 41.8 cents plus 10 cents Fed tax & 14 cents Prov. tax. for a total of 65.8 cents. Pump price 91.9 minus the GST. is 87.52 cents. Leaving a margin of 87.52-65.8=21.72.  
This seems like a lot but I don't think that there was much money to be made in Dec. at 6 cents margin.  
I haven't included trucking in these figures because I don't know what the figure is.  
I will post my graphs in the photo section of EB.  
If anyone can see any errors in my calculations or process please let me know.
