I thought it would be common knowledge not to accept a cheque, cash only.  
Tough lesson I suppose.

Actually lots of places & people still deal with cheques

Someone try to use their debit card and it was declined. Then they asked to write a cheque! Lol. If there's no money in your account using your debit card, there's no money in that account for writing a cheque. The answer was 'no'. Some people are slick though and every time you make an exception, you get burned. Don't take cheques unless they are certified.

That's a bold statement. I'm neither a scammer or over 70 (not yet anyway) I often pay by cheque and accept cheques as payment, by those known to me, at my workplace.  
 
It's true you need to be careful accepting cheques, but it's still an acceptable method of payment under the right circumstances.

Don't trust anybody. Especially when it comes to money.  
Always do transactions like that with a Money Order / Bank Draft. Exact same thing as a cheque, except the bank writes it. So you know they took the money out of their account for you. Plus, it comes with a receipt copy so if anything happens in the long run you have the copy to determine you made the payment.  
 
Or like the good ol' days. Cash money.
