It's just NFC (near field communication) it's been around for decades but starting to be used in 2006.
There really is nothing magical about it. Apple only jumped on the nfc bandwagon when the 6 came out. Blackberry and Samsung had phones out long before Apple finally got around to using NFC chips.
It's about as magical as your tap and pay interac card, or credits cards you have now. Except you can use you phone instead to pay.
But it''s Apple Pay "branding hype" and it''s AMAZING. Apple wants to make it mainstream so they can suck profits everytime you use it from .05 a .10 a transaction the money would add up quick..
