Black caterpillars...there back..

they seem to be making an appearance again, this time they are too high up in the tree for us to spray. Our neighbor's tree has them too. Any idea what to do? They were really bad last year, the city came to spray.

No sign yet this year but our neighbourhood has been hit hard in the past and so have the BTK locked and loaded. Curious what you spray with?

If it''s city property you can also call City Parks and Rec. At the least they will probably come out and take a look and assess whether they needs to be action taken on their part (they've sprayed our boulevard trees in the past).

on the north hill. Sprayed the other day. BTK is OK but dish soap and water kills them quicker.

There's a pretty extensive writeup on it at the link below. It refers to Gypsy Moths but is also used to control tent caterpillars:

Its what the nursery recommended and sold last year when I asked about safely controlling the caterpillars we've seen but also saw it on the shelf at Cdn Tire the other day.

I did not realize it was the name of the product. That makes sense now.
Will keep it in mind as I have some trees in my yard that could be affected.

Notice put out by the City of intent to spray for these caterpillars in effected areas is at the link below. They can't spray until wind is under 20 km/hr and rain isn't expected 24 hours after spraying. Note the line toward the end about consulting a tree professional or greenhouse/nursery about control on private property. Sounds like areas of the North Hill are the most immediate right now but I know of a lot of Ash trees in the South that also have large clusters all over. If you notice something in your area I would call the City Parks Department at 729-2148... I assume the more info they have the better they can address.

I walked from 9th to 12th street down princess and had about 10 of them on me. I was ready to walk down the middle of the street to avoid them. Unless absolutely necessary I will not be going anywhere near downtown until it is treated. Yuck yuck yuck!

These caterpillars will bite sometimes. I think they are just looking for food but it hurts nonetheless. A water/dishsoap/vinegar solution works well to kill them.

They stripped all the leaves on one of the small aspens we planted last year, and were starting on a second when I noticed.

I shop vac'd them up and lit them on fire as punishment.

for spraying, low wind and no rain. I was out last night burning the buggers and they seem to have multiplied overnight. It's Brandon, when will there not be wind?

North Hill, and the sidewalks are crawling with them. I was constantly picking them out of my hair...Ewww. Not to mention they have eaten almost all the leaves off my blueberry bush, and are in my trees. I wish the City would spray!! I tried spraying, but overnight new ones appear. The trees in this area are really bad, so even if you take care of your own, it doesn't make a difference.

They are down on the south central area of town too, way too many to spray with soapy water and they keep falling in clumps from the large trees! Bleh! Definitely not how I wanted to spend my early summer inside all the time! But better than them falling in my hair and on my clothes! My car is covered, I hope the city will spray for them!

I've never seen an infestation as bad as this year... SO grossed out and a bit peeved the city didn't start spraying already. In our neighbourhood they started in city property trees and now the whole neighbourhood is infested.. I have the 'hee bee gee bees' with how many there are ... Ughhhh !!!

Unfortunately I'm guessing it's going to have to wait a couple days with all the rain that's expected tonight into tomor (unless they managed to do some yesterday)

Then also factor in that it's supposed to take 1-3 days to fully do its job after caterpillars eat sprayed leaves... Though they're supposed to stop feeding further once they eat some.
Re the amount of time with no rain after applying, not sure if this is the same label as what the city uses and they may have other reasons for the 24 hour number but from an effectiveness standpoint at least I thought it was interesting that this one says rain fastness in 3 hours: http://www.valent.ca/products/dipelwp/loader.cfm?csModule=security/getfile&pageid=12479

Noticed a lot of them only last evening, as they are crawling up the side of the house.
Hoping a huge flock of birds stop by for a feed.

I bought some Raid "Crawling Insect" spray, and sprayed that around the bottom of the house, and around my doors. This seems to keep the little critters from crawling up the house, for a bit anyway.
Just have to remember not to touch it, and wash your hands well afterwards.
Thought I'd share, in case anyone else wanted to try it.

Yesterday I went to Walmart and as I was shopping I noticed one had hitched a ride on my shoulder. So if you were in Walmart around 9:30 am and heard a bit of a scream it was me. Sorry. It caught me off guard and I kind of freaked out. But I did squash him. I had the heebie-jeebies all day after that.

My trees are fairly far from my house and I see lots on my house. So they seem to move a far distance. They seem drawn to light colored homes. Either that or they are just more noticeable on them. In any case I can't wait till our weather permits spraying because these suckers are freakin' me out.

Re the city release at the link below, spraying will begin between 12am and 8am tonight/tomorrow morning. If I'm understanding correctly the main focus at this time looks to be [i]"from the Kirkcaldy Drive walking path north to the White Swan Trailer Court; extending east from 18th Street over to 1st Street"[/i]

I really hope that no one in my neighbourhood has a "medical" reason to have the buffer zone applied. It will be cool enough tonight to turn off your AC, and be able to sleep with your windows closed. If we don't spray everything, there is no point, they will continue to spread.
