I am looking to hear some good stories from people who have been able to break free from our current Corporate dictatorships and go out on their own and succeed. I did own a business about 10 years ago with a partner, and as relationships sometimes go whether it be business or romantic, things fell apart and my partner left me for broke and had no other option but to go back to the grind and I hate it. The company I have worked for now for quite a while now seems to think they own us, never giving raises yet they have money for expansion which always leaves us doing more work for the same wage year after year, yet when we discuss performance I hear "You are doing wonderful for us, but "sniff" its tough out there "sniff" we are holding our own but trust us, the expansion we are doing will be better for you in the long run. Just give us time and we promise we will make it up to you. yada yada yada, typical big company. I am feeling the need to try and go out on my own again. Some people can't work for themselves but I was 7 years owning/managing and I miss being able to do things how I see fit and live and die by the consequences. Some good stories please. I know I am not alone in feeling this. Sadly the biggest problem I do have is my skills involve very pricey equipment so start up down payment is hard to save up with after tax dollars. Buy people do it so lets hear some good stories from people who broke free!

I feel as though your opening post could have been written by me. I found myself in your same position this Christmas. Had to take a "job for the man" after being my own boss for a lengthy period. I felt unsatisfied and was getting increasingly unhappy. It was affecting me and my family negatively. It was really crappy but lit that fire under my a to change my story  
I got out of the "job" and went back into business for myself!  
I know you posted start up costs are prohibitive, but you MUST find a way. It may be hard and challenging and frustrating, but MAKE IT WORK!! Live and die by it and all  
When you work for yourself, doing what you love, you'll NEVER "work" a day in your life!
