I recently bought a little house which needed new shingles. I had family and friends help and got the job done. I had borrowed a large truck and took the shingles to the dump. Upon leaving I was told because of the weight, I would be getting a bill for over $200.00!!! Seriously??? I had to scrape money together for shingles and then find more to get rid of the old ones yet! If we had taken smaller loads we could have left them there for free. I find it very unfair. Our tax dollars are going for what?? I could have taken them out to the country and had a bonfire and burned them for free. I had no idea it was going to cost me. I'm new in Brandon and not impressed with this system.

This is not just something Brandon does. Every landfill charges you if your over a certain weight limit. They also charge you if you have a company name on the door of your vehicle, but you could take the same load to the dump in your personal vehicle and not pay a dime. It's just the way it is and has been for a long time.The money goes towards maintaing the landfill and wages.  
 
And I wouldn't recommend burning asphalt shingles.

If I remember correctly, they charge $10 minimum for any weight. At least Bdn is free if you are under 500kg.

The fee schedule is on the City of Brandon website. New to town or not up to you to do the research.

Ok...what do you think tax dollars go towards. They fund the sportsplex, should all activities be free due to tax dollars? Why didn't you save them and every week toss some in the dumpster that you get? At my business taxes are $15,000 a year. I don't even get garbage collection for that. I have to pay on average another $750 a month for collection. I have to pay about $250 per haul to the dump for a 30 yard container. I don't feel your pain at all. Really $200 to dispose of shingles isn't expensive. What percent of that is that out of the total cost of labor and shingles? I am all for home ownership but when I hear about people having to scrape money together for repairs I have to wonder what happens when something else goes wrong.

the dumping site always charges for certain items, roofing is one, including cedar shakes also, over a certain weight, you get charged...personal vehicle or not... certain building materials are frowned upon, and asbestos has to be buried in it's own area which costs you $$$

Brandon is rare in terms of a major city and doesn't charge for loads, the limit has to start somewhere... 500 kg I believe its starts. If you were in Winnipeg you get charged a minimum no matter what the weight was, and more based on the weight. Sorry you didn't check, but tough nooggies on you

done that too makes no sense u could do 4 trips to dump longs ur under 500 kg it free but u take 1 big load to get job done still take same amount as 4 loads in 1 load u get a bill dumb. I took load of wood and dirt once got 160$ bill I called land fill office and said its compost like really so lady was nice enough to wave the charge might be worth the try good luck

Which business do you own by chance? I only ask because I tend to avoid giving my business to Pompous arrogant asses that that minimize the financial burden of others. easy for someone of means to say that 200 bucks isn''t expensive and to take the stance that home ownership should somehow be reserved only for those that have fat bank accounts. ask all of your employee''s that you pay minimum wage and who cant afford to take a single sick day because they have to cover rent to their slum landlord (I wouldnt doubt if you own revenue property too)while your off fishing whether a third of their pay check isn''t a lot of money to them. I''m sure there of plenty of Brandon folks who would love to know who the local business owners in town are who feel that it is in the best interest of people who work pay check to pay check to pay rent and spend what money they do have at your business rather than to pursue a goal like home ownership. I hope lots of people figure out who you are or if its common knowledge stop giving you their business and if they do stop resulting in a loss of revenue please report back any financial hardship you experience so we can all feel your pain.
