anyone else having troubles finding housing to rent that allows pets ??

It tools us 8 months to find a pet friendly place. When they come up, you compete against hundreds of other people. We ended up finding a place with a great landlord, but we pay 1300$ a month. You can try arbutus place, but they do credit checks and are pricy. I honestly wish you good luck. Took us 8 months and we grabbed the first place we got and signed a 3 year lease happily.

Good luck, sadly even with a full months rent as a deposit there are very few. And some of those ones aren't exactly desirable spots. It's understandable why they don't allow ( one bad apple spoils the batch) but with good references and deposit one would hope for more willing. Best of luck.

it's the smell...cats especially...it just attaches itself to the house like a poltergeist...

I have seen so much damage from pets (both cats and dogs to apartments). The landlord will most likely have to remove all carpets, disenfect walls, etc. I do not blame them one bit for not allowing pets.  
 
Why not wait until you are settled in "your" permanent home to get a pet? I always wanted a car, but rented, so never bothered looking, as I knew it would be to hard to find a decent place to live. (I rented for 15 years - waiting to get that cat). I now have a home, 2 cats and loving it, knowing I am not going to have to get rid of my pets, or have to look for a decent place to live.  
 
Wait until you have your own place to give you and your pet the perfect, long lasting home.

Exactly, I never owned my home for a really, really long time as I mentioned and I waited to get my cats until I could. (15 years)  
 
So, if you rent and the landlord says it is ok, you get a pet. You decide you don't like the apartment, don't like the neighborhood, can't get along with the landlord, he raises the rent, never fixes anything and you have to move. You cannot find a place to rent that will let you have a pet, do you just get rid of the pet? Just because the landlord says you can have one, does not mean you will be staying in that rental forever, wait and get a place to call your own.
