We just inherited a vintage Rolex watch and were wondering if anyone in the area appraises or authenticates Rolex timepieces.

The only authorized Rolex dealer in Manitoba is Independent Jewelers in Winnipeg. They can verify authenticity using the serial number and also appraise it and provide you with a certificate for insurance purposes.  
 
Depending on age and model, there are a variety of "tells" that will confirm authenticity. The most obvious is to remove the case back and check the movement. With very few exceptions, a real Rolex will have a mechanical movement which means the second hand sweeps and doesn't tick or move in small jumps. Rolex made some quartz watches but not very many.  
 
Usually you need a jeweler with the proper tool to remove the case back so don't try this yourself otherwise you risk damaging and marring the case back which will result in a loss in value. The location of serial numbers also varies depending on age. If it is a real Rolex and in decent condition it will be worth some money. It's almost impossible to pick up a Rolex in good condition, of any age, for less than $2000.
