Fund Raising Socials

I am wondering what other people think about these socials. I am think they are great for the person/persons that may need to go out of province to get the specialized health care they need. Or, are just burdened with a bunch of costs and don't have company insurance to pay these costs.
My problem is: what if you have a social for someone, make alot of money, and they go and have their medical care looked after, etc. Now - when they return, earlier than expected, or Manitoba insurance, or company insurance decides to pick up some of the costs, should the people that put on the fundraising social be advised that there is money left over? Like I said, these are great "fundraising socials", but should we be asking to see receipts of their out of pocket expenses? If there is money left over, than they can donate it to a charity of their choice.
For the record, I am in no way involved in this type of thing, nor have I ever put on a fundraising social for anyone, just curious as to peoples thoughts. How do we know there is not money left over and everyone is now healthy and fine, and the money could go to someone else needy. I am not talking a couple of hundred dollars, I am thinking more like $500 and up.
