Shoppers Drug Mart moving to the mall

    I hope the new Shoppers Drug Mart will have two entrances - one from the mall for mall shoppers and one from the parking lot for those of us who just want to run in for prescriptions, etc.

    I just really have a hard time believing that if someone pulls up to new Shoppers Drug Mart at 11:00pm for a last minute 4L of milk that there'll be much if any difference in the amount of steps from their car to their milk but I guess time will tell  
     
    Re Sobeys pharmacy, I wouldn’t automatically assume that Sobeys just found out about this just because we just did (have no info on timelines myself, just speaking to the fact that the public and private sides of business deals may be different). Re multiple pharmacies, wasn't that long ago that there were Target and Safeway pharmacies in the same mall so theres precedent.  

    Re London Drugs, was in one of their bigger stores a couple months ago and was impressed by how far they get into electronics and seasonal (SDM no slouch themselves). I’m just getting creative here but it’s entirely possible that Shoppers has some kind of clause in their lease re similar businesses. For all we know this came about because London (or Rexall?) were looking at the mall and Shoppers made this move to pre-empt them   

    Re post office, fingers crossed that it will follow to the mall location. We have a PO box and would be so handy to stop in for mail while doing anything else we have to do at the mall.  
     
    Re a skywalk across 18th st. Not sure what option is best to be looked at but I agree 5000% that there needs to be a better pedestrian connection from the mall to 18th. Start by making the crosswalk that lines up with Burger King more pedestrian friendly, more importantly something needs to be done about 18th and Aberdeen which is a natural place for foot traffic to want to cross to connect with the bike path system. Going to guess that skywalk/bridge is a pretty over the top financial commitment but if the Province, City and Morguard put their heads together there has to be some way to make crossing better than it is right now!  
     
    Re the comment that Shoppers will be reducing grocery at the new store. Just to make sure we’re dealing in fact in stead of rumour, can you share where that info came from?  
     
    But one things for sure.... Boxing Day 2018, mark it on your calendar. Yikes!

    My family and I are not happy about this move. I hate trying to park at the mall and as others have said, with two restaurtants, reduced number of spots to park - it is just an awful idea. I'll be moving my prescription file to 1st st when they move.

    I know people are complaining their gonna move pharmacies. That's great. Shoppers Drug Mart at the end of the day doesn't care. With the move they will get new people at their Pharmacy and it will only increase traffic.  
     
    Also with them moving to the mall, they will have a better makeup section as the food section maybe gone.

    Removing the grocery section completely would be foolish: that place is packed on Sunday evenings when the rest of the city is closed.

    Remember when the talk was about the death of that mall and no one wanted to go there, now it's too busy and no one wants to go there. Very interesting.

    The second thing about Shoppers is that no two stores are alike. The company developes each store into the store needed for the area its in.  
    For example, the farther into the suburbs the more likely the store will have a larger fresh food area.  
     
    Shoppers didn’t become one of Canada’s most profitable companies by accident.  
     
    I like Sobey's, I like Shoppers, I really like Eastside Mario's, and I'm interested in Thai Express.

    some like the mall , some don't , personally there is nothing at the mall that i require that i cannot purchase else where so i have no need for the mall

    For fun and by no means purely science...  
     
    From closest parking spot at current Shoppers Drug to front door: 16 steps  
    From closest parking spot to (former) Five Guys door: 25 steps  
     
    Difference: 9 steps, which if you want to get technical some of which may be made up depending on store entrance, layout and any differences from how Five Guys was accessed  
     
    If talking late at night I'd need to see it to believe that there won't be plenty of parking to choose from on an average day

    Really coming along. I understand the target for opening right now is late November, but as always when given a date this far out it’s to be taken with a bit of a grain of salt depending on how the rest of the construction process goes

    I think the real reason so many are upset is they won't be able to just park where ever they feel like parking...like along the fence or in front of the doors with the flashers on or essentially anywhere BUT the marked parking slots.  
     
    I was there on Saturday and every parking spot in front of the doors was open but there were 2 cars parked on the curbs with their flashers on, 4 cars parked along that fence/wall on the north side of the parking lot...I just kind of laughed to myself.

    As for the entrances, there is two, side by side, one for SDM and one for the mall, great thinking on the mall's part!

    The old location that they are moving from used to be part of was called the shppees mall anex. Not sure now but if so London Drugs would probably not be allowed into the mall anyways. I find the current 18Th shoppers my least fav. Maybe a reset in its new location may help. Parking though will be a issue at peak times. I agree with others here on the thread. What will happen to the old location. Stores moving around is change but not city growth. Shuffling the decks on a sinking ship? No but if it looks like a duck. A separate thread is needed. A empty sobeys. A empty Re done Stans. Empty drivers liscencing. The old Kmart. Just how many gas stations. All in all in this case I hope for a bigger better Shoppers. One can not complain about its hours of operation.

    With the move, looks like the other location is my only option if I want to shop SDM. Sigh. No comparison between the two locations for customer service. I will miss SDM. Like other places, items, I'll get over it.

    I tried to rent space in that building but was rejected quickly. They are looking for medical professionals only.

    The mall parking lot in front of where the Shoppers Drug mart is going to be is totally full right now on a Saturday afternoon and the Shoppers store isn’t even open yet! Can’t imagine when it is open!

    Just came from Sobey's. The Shopper's signage looks like it's all in place outside. I didn't look close enough to see if anything was open. It'll be nice to be able to get from the mall to Sobey's now, though.

    I’ll be shopping more at it once moved, just because of how often I’m at the mall. Suppose I’ll cancel one of the above out

    The only time I go to the mall is for storytime with the kids. We stop in at dollarama for a treat and now I’m happy that we can access sobeys from in the mall so we can pickup a few groceries if needed. If SDM has access, we will browse in there too. If not, Oh well, I don’t shop there currently anyways.  
     
    For those looking for a new pharmacy, give Leeanne at Co Op a try! Amazing staff there, decent parking and quick trip in and out
