there was a big traffic jam on tuesday about noon time.on first street stretching across the first street bridge and almost all the way to veterans way.does anyone know what was the cause ?

I'm guessing it was because of a bridge girder being put in place.

It was announced on the news and facebook that it would be easier to take another route this week, as the bridge on 1st would be shut down at times.

Also added about as close up a pic as I have to this thread of what they were up to when they had to stop Southbound traffic around 11AM yesterday

Just because it's a small traffic jam compared to California doesn't mean it wasn't horrible for those stuck in it. En route to hospital and stuck for an hour. They really should have had signs or closed the road.

crunchy: bad joke on my part. I come from the perspective of no matter how bad you think you have it, there's always someone else in a worse spot. Have been caught in a similar jam at the same spot as whats in the pic and lets just say if it was any longer there would've been a difficult bladder decision to make  
I don't know how people do it in major metros where they see this sort of thing on a daily basis.  
Re being en route to the hospital, I imagine authorities were given the heads up beforehand to plan their route accordingly and wouldn''t be surprised if they still had some sort of contingency plan.

I should have clarified. I personally was en route to the hospital. Thank god I was able to turn around, drive the wrong way up the off ramp and cross kirkcaldy to head west to 18th and back around. I heard they shut the whole street down today for another girder so they must have realized what a mistake they made.

Yup it was definitely announced that there would be major delays. The company doing the work has been asked to keep the delays to off peak times. I forgot about it myself and got stuck it it today. Also saws truck and car going in reverse down first street along the far right. As annoyed as they were to be stuck in traffic you're lucky no one hit you as people were still using that right lane to travel up and cut in where they could further up the line.  
 
It really wasn't that bad of a wait that I had. Maybe 10-15 minutes and that was today I want to say shortly after 11am.
