Rant - yes I'm angry. Is Brandon not a city, does the City bus not consider all the people that do have to work on special holidays - NO! There are stores, food establishments, gas stations, lot of work places that are not closed on stat holidays. My daughter has a disability. She depends on the bus to get to and from her place of employment. She cannot afford a car or insurance for it and there is no subsidized housing anywhere close to her job so its too far to walk. At 6 a.m. this morning she stood waiting for a bus to take her to work and there wasn't one. She walked back home and called her place of work to explain why she wasn't there. A brand new job that she has just started and is so excited about finally get a chance to show she can work. A taxi is about $15 one way and even if she could have gotten one she would have been late to work. She has no friends or family that live close enough to Brandon to ask for a ride. People with disabilities deserve to have a convenient bus system in a City as big as Brandon.

Healthcare workers, many whom work on stat holidays, and take the bus. Very unfortunate indeed.

In a city as big as Brandon??!? Winnipeg Transit is also operating on a holiday schedule today. Heck, even TTC in Toronto is using a holiday schedule. If they don't run a normal schedule on Thanksgiving, why do you expect Brandon to?  
 
Sorry to hear about your daughter, though. She should keep this in mind next time there is a holiday.

Just wondering what the disability has to do with the buses not running?  
If your a regular bus user checking to see if buses are running today should have been a given. I'm sorry she missed her work, but there are other solutions to the problem. Not accepting a shift on a holiday, exploring cab companies and what they offer. Arranging with a co-worker to ride in.....calling handivan depending on the disability.  
We are not a huge city and can't be compaired to such. But exploring and preparing could have avoided this issue.

That's unfortunate. But the city does run buses even on stat holidays when there are hardly any riders, I might add at a great cost too!  
 
I assume that you also do not have a vehicle and couldn't offer to drive your daughter?

Yes I guess it's unfortunate for her but she should have checked the schedule in advance. In the event that nobody could have given her a ride, there is always the option to bike or walk for the one day.

If you would read the Brandon Transit website, it states:  
 
The hours for all Statutory Holidays are 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Buses run on the hour (just as they do every Sunday)  
*The Information Centre will be closed on Sundays and Statutory Holidays*  
 
So, yes, there was no bus at 6 AM because they start at 8 today. Yes it sucks that she wasn’t able to make it to work but she should have double checked and had a backup plan just to be safe.

Please let me know which taxi business charges $10. I will pass that on to her. So far, it has been almost $15 one way and on minimum wage at 3 hours twice a week there wouldn't be much left of her pay cheque.

Would love to know what taxi company charges that. When I need to take a cab to the Corral Centre it's $15 each way....I live in the south east end.

That might work in a small town, but that would be hard to pull off in Brandon. Depending on how far you're going. If you needed a ride from Glendale to the mall, I can see that being $15 or more or sure.

Have you considered starting a 'rideshare'? Have her post a ad looking for rides, or even ask people at work to chip in for ride share. Everyone contributes a buck or two per ride, which covers the car owners gas, maintnance, and insurance.  
 
It worked well for me for years in MB and SK.

It’s Rainbow Taxi that offers rides anywhere in the city for $10. At least they used to, I’m not sure if they still do

Thank you for all the helpful hints. For a young person just starting out on their own it becomes overwhelming when when problems arise. It is a learning experience but it still becomes a scary time.

Yes, Rainbow Taxi does/did have the “$10 fare anywhere in Brandon” on their business cards... however, I was given a card when I randomly used them one time and then I called the next time and was told the North Hill area was too far for that “deal” by the driver. So she should double check with dispatch or each driver before she banks on a $10 cab ride.

I have no idea why you need to mention that your daughter has a disability. Does she need the Handi-Transit? Even then that starts at 6:30 and with like any city run on holiday hours. It has it right on their website. Has she made it known to her employer that she relies on the bus? I have employees that say if they cannot make it in till later due to the hours of the transit system. So what do you want? Fire up a bus on overtime rates just to pick up your daughter when she wants a ride? All cities have holiday hours. Your comments about disabilities and how the bus isn't accommodating for her hours of work is ridiculous. That is like me saying...."I am Ukrainian. I work at 6am so a bus must pick me up at 5am so I can be at work in time....this is a city, they must accommodate."
