So what is the deal with all of these wild rabbits around town? Are they ok to eat or....??? asking for a friend

You can't kill them. Call animal control.

How do you know you can’t kill them? Is there a law? Just curious

To please eat them all. ACO won't do squat about the city overrun with wild rabbits or the idiots who feed the wildlife to keep the "cute" things in the neighbourhood. You want cute, get a gerbil.

you are not a gardener! Rabbits can decimate your crops.

Can completely destroy your shrubs and bushes as well during the winter. Cute, but pests.

excellent eating - they have a taste similar to chicken. This is the best time to harvest them as they are nice and fat due to feasting on peoples gardens and berries all summer. There is no law against killing them - just do it in a humane quick manner. After the rabbit has been skinned and cleaned soak same in salty water for couple of hours, this will draw the blood and parasites(if any) from the meat. Lots of recipes on line for cooking same so tell your friend to enjoy.

Actually, there is a bylaw against it, if OP is within the city limits:  
 
[b]Bylaw 5806/81/90[/b]  
[i]8.2) No person shall hunt, trap, take, kill or capture, or attempt to trap, take, kill or capture a wild animal within the City of Brandon.[/i]  
 
Licenses are not required for small game such as rabbits, so if OP is outside of the city limits, trapping them should be fair game unless they fall under another jurisdiction with a similar by-law.

if your worried about your garden, and shrubs just make it uncomfortable for them and they will skidaddle over to the neighbours.

You can't kill any animal in the city. Look what happened to the kids that went after the wild turkeys.  
 
Plain and simple it's against the law.

You don’t want to kill the ones in the city anyway as they have ingested all the crap that people feed em, go trap em where they are really fed good, they get good and fat.
