I just wanted to thank the gentleman who sat next to my family at Mum's Restaurant on Thursday AM. We broke into polite conversation as we waited for our respective orders to be filled. I didn't realize until I was readying to pay for my families meals that this gentleman had picked up our tab for us.  
 
I am humbled and grateful for the generosity and solemnly promise that this will be payed forward.  
 
Thank you, Sir. Your kindness will not be forgotten.

Don't know why someone would assume that the generous gentleman was "lonely" and that you are doing something wonderful by engaging in polite conversation. Isn't that what most people do?  
People eat alone for a variety of reasons, does not mean they are lonely.  
Otherwise, a nice story shared.
