Seems to happen more and more with people buying cell phones both on here and facebook. That are either stolen or broken, in some form or fashion. Sometimes isn't worth it saving a few bucks on expensive items like cell phonea.

I’m really sorry to read this. I have no information that it’s any more common now than any other time but I’m confident that when this type of thing is alleged the Police are there to properly investigate and respond as appropriate. Please also report via the Contact/support link. I take maintaining the best possible environment for buyers and sellers seriously and reports go a long way toward helping with that.

Unfortunately you have to watch everything and anything you buy second hand, I've never bought a phone off anyone off here, but I did buy a car seat off of somebody on here, got it home, took the top cover off to wash it, and it was all torn up underneath, the adjustable straps were stuck, and it smelled very strongly of mould. We in fact threw it straight in the garbage, and to no surprise, the ad is nowhere to be found. Car seat was advertised in "great used condition." Which definitely was not true.

If you buy something without checking it out thoroughly, I'm sorry but you can hardly blame the seller.

A phone that may look fine can be blacklisted after the sale. It is impossible to know whether or not it is stolen without asking for a reciept (which could be forged as well).  
 
Also, I noticed alot of people are setting themselves up to be scammed. I listed a phone for a little under a $1000 and had alot of lowballs around $300 or $400. Eventually I sold the phone for around my asking price. Nobody is going to accept your offer unless they are selling a stolen item. You can also get in serious trouble with the police for knowingly purchasing stolen property.

a few ways to confirm if a phone you are buying is not stolen is get the IMEI from the seller and go to https://www.devicecheck.ca/check-status-device-canada/ If they refuse then stay away from the device. Not sure it Apple phones can be checked with that, but contact Apple to see if they can check. Ya some people have no morals and they just want money money money.

I've bought a phone on here even met the seller at mts and asked them as well as got a sim card for my number....5 days later it was blacklisted so even checking wont do anything as they can claim it's stolen AFTER the purchase

the number of people that will try to scam the buyer.I wont buy anything used unless I can pick it up in person at their at home.  
 
I figure if they are willing to take a chance on me, an unknown coming their home, they are not going to scam me.  
 
I know that is not always possible.  
 
Figure i would sooner pay a bit more, buy new, get a warrenty, get a return policy than take a chance getting ripped off and losing the money.  
 
Chrismann, The guy that you met at mts that sold you the phone, I wonder what he would have done if you took his id off a drivers license. sounds like he was the one that stole it in the first place. I would be calling the police on that and lodge a formal.  
 
Iether he just blacklisted the phone cause he can and is a low life, or he stole it and resold to you, and is still a low life.

Well this guy didn't have to run..the phone was picked up at his house.So the police know who he is.And the other part of the story is the phone was being bought to replace one that had been stolen from work where it was behind a counter.The thief was caught on video..theft was reported to police..thief is known to the police but both incidents are still in limbo.I used to think selling stolen property as well stealing from a business was illegal...maybe I am wrong.I mean..how much more evidence do you need?

Is why I would never buy a used phone. There may be deals to be had, but there are just too many ways to get taken when buying used phones.

Even buying a used phone at a business is no guarantee, you might be getting a deal, but you also have no assurance they didn't change out that battery with a knock off and now your phone never holds a charge more than 5 mins.
